Hello from Chicago
Allow me to introduce myself...
Douglas S Lehman
Chicagoland Marine Aquarist Society (CMAS) President
Let me start by saying those 3 stores are indeed some of the nicest to shop at and to shoot the breeze.
All are listed as CMAS supporters that offer a club discount to our members, 10% and some times more!
A road trip would be most enjoyable for anyone interested in marine life, specifically corals (SPS).
Plan on a early start and a full day as they are quite a distance apart, I live in Des Plaines (near O'hare airport) and they are all at least a 45 minute drive from here in three different directions.
If the timing is right, I could join you (club road trip) for a fun day of fishing.

Steve,
No tank, I'm done for a while :( But I could be talked into a road trip to the above mentioned stores....again. We have done it in the past, and one of the nice owners even let us have a bbq at his place. We could meet up with other Chicago folk and make a day of it. Sounds like a good spring project.

anyone know the new address to Sea Schorr in Buffalo Grove, IL? I was impressed with their sps selection when I went to their old store.

Last weekend had the chance to visit two stores that are mentioned quite a bit in this forum. Here is a rundown:

Coral Corner -Located in Racine. This store is pretty new and the guys there were working on the set up. Had a few fish and some soft and hard corals. No sps corals though. Their prices were upper middle of the road. Reasonable but not great. They were really nice and great to talk to. I think in time the store will grow and it has potential to become a great store. They did say they could order whatever I wanted. I will probably go back in a few months to check it out again.

Sharkey's Reef -Located just west of Gurnee Mills Mall. As many of you know its run out of a basement. I was impressed with the set up and selection was awesome. Tons of corals but not too many fish. Everything looked really healthy but I wasn't too impressed with the prices. I thought with the lower overhead the prices would have been better. Still, a great store if you are looking for a nice $100 sps coral. Cheaper than Hoffers but not by much. He did have a few frags but most of them were dark brown/pink. Great people to deal with though and really nice. I will definitely go back. Sharkey's is by far the best store I have been to in Wisconsin so far. Comparable with Sea Schorr in Buffalo Grove (haven't seen the new location yet).

I am still going to hit up Shotanks and Rod's Reef in the near future so I can post what those were like also.

The guys at the Coral Corner do get some really nice SPS in now & again. But most of their customers aren't into SPS. They even commented to me unprovoked, that they don't get much demand for SPS there. Right now or as of Thursday evening, they had a smokin acro for $70. And had a nice assortmant of small clams that came in also. Wish I had room in my tank :(

Must remember to keep my mouth shut.

Coral Corner is very nice - they will bargain if you push, but I thought their prices on most stuff were reasonable, and they are honest.

I bought a squamosa for 25 and a crocea (4") for 55... along with a bunch of other fish - they threw in a frag of a colt, that is already over 6" in my tank. They have some great LPS corals for sure. They had a few SPS in, but told me the same thing - no real demand.

Tell them you are in the club, and they are really easy to deal with.

I was at a small place in Grafton this weekend, Pet Supply Outlet. My kids had told me they had salt water fish. The dept is small, but it looked in good shape. They had a small selection of fish and inverts. I asked a lot of questions, not for advice, but to see if they knew what they were doing. I ended up buying a Sailfin Tang that fought all weekend with my Yellow Tang. LOL, I put a net in the middle of the tank and both were afraid of it. They're getting along fine now.

I ended up buying a Sailfin Tang .

How much for the sailfin tang? How were the rest of their prices.

The Tang was $28, and I thought the rest of their prices were reasonable (compared to Hoffers, that is). They had Percula Clowns for $15.

Anyone been to "The Feed Bag" in Grafton? I heard they were supposed to have saltwater fish.

Steve

yeah, been there and done that.

they had a couple (like 4 tanks) with SW fish in them. they even had a 180g tank with SW@ in it, but took it down. all they had were damsels in it, and blue rocks for a substrate.

they have not had any SW for months now.. and they never had inverts, just fish like clowns and damsels.

pet supply outlet isnt much better. they do have a few corals from time to time, but many times their fish are in poor health, so be careful.
although they did have a few decently priced corals. there were 2 3 headed frogspawns (labeled torch coral) for 38 bucks as of 1.5 weeks ago, and an elegance coral (38 dollars) that looked good (for now) but labeled as a brain coral. I told them about both mis labelings, but I doubt they did anything. I also told them of the low survival rate of elegance corals so, we shall see...
they had a short tentacle plate for 38 as well, it was nice, as well as hairy shrooms, and zoos for the same $$.
i get my dog food from both places in grafton i go frequently.. i have 3 dogs that total 250 pounds, so we go through a bit of food, and stop at these stores often.. they are like 300 yards from eachother, so, try both, but do not have high expectations.

i like lincoln tropical fish and pet in hartford better for coral...

Aquatics By Kr in Waterford went out of business at the end of March. When he had fish in, it was decent prices. Not much in corals.

Where is the best place to buy salt? I've been buying it at Hoffer's just because they are closer to me, but I'm probably paying way too much.
