I have found that they grow equally well in either place, the roots are primarily for attachment not for nutrient uptake although some uptake most likely does occur through the attachments. When caulerpa is trimmed it releases toxins si I usually dont trim too much at once and I keep the growth of it small. I trim it as often as necessary to keep it about softball size.
