Best macro ability for a point and shoot...

An SLR would take away 3/4 of my picture taking. Mama loves movies of the kids and I don't really want a bunch of lenses to deal with.

So, what "point and shoot" camera would give the best ability to take macro shots of my reef, as well as movies of the kids?

Any info or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

I own Canon G9, and has been very impressed with its macro shots

here are some examples:

Very nice, I am also looking for one of those. but the G9 is pretty much SLR priced.

Hardly. A SLR, out of the box with the kit lens isn't going to out perform the G9 (or 10) in macro capability unless you buy a macro lens as well. That's going to tack on at least $400 to the purchase price.

People just don't understand that a $500 SLR body could easily run $3000 once you factor in the cost of needed accessories. I don't know of a single point and shoot that is more expensive than a Rebel once you realise that the point and shoot is good to go out of the box. The Rebel on the other hand is like a reef tank with no skimmers, pumps, or LR and needs a lot more money thrown at it after the fact.

Thanks for all the input. I was wondering why I wasn't getting an email response to this thread. I guess I have to subscribe to my own topic.

Any other recommendations besides the sony dsc-t20 and the canon g9?

Dancewithethan, great shots. Are they with raw or jpg format?
90shooter, those are fantastic shots. How far away were they taken?

A DSLR with a kit lens is ready to go out of the box. It is also far more capable than a P&S which is why you may want to start collecting stuff for it.

Has it been a while since you looked at a DSLR? Some of them are quite small now but you will never slip it in your pocket.

If you want a P&S, I would go for the G9 or G10 if I were in that market today.

Most reasonable quality P&S will take a decent pic but your technique becomes very important. Just make sure the subject is in focus and crop it down. A lot of people try to get too close and frame their shot and end up beyond the min focusing distance of the camera and then they get blurry junk.

my 7mp fuji finepixs takes really nice pics,it has macro mode as well as movie mode.it also has a manual setting feature as well.for around $200 you can get one.

couple of sample pics for you.

I would rather have a G-9 than a Rebel with a kit lens. If your going to keep the kit lens, sure the DSLR is ready to go and there is nothing left to buy. If you are going to keep the 18-55 and forget about upgrading further, you just wasted your money and should have gotten a point and shoot IMO.

Suggesting that it takes $2500 to make a DSLR take photos is ridiculous. I'm pretty happy with the kit lens from the XSi. It certainly isn't the same as one of my L lenses, but considering the price and its size/weight - its a nice lens.

These are from a 4-5 year old 3.2 MP Cannon powershot A70. I can only assume the new ones are much much better, but for the age of the camera I think it does a nice job in macro mode. I always use my Rebel now so I don't know which current camera is best, but I would buy another Cannon if I needed one.

Great pictures Sunfish. I Guess time to get a Canon Powershot, anyone know if any of the Point and Shoot takes pictures in Raw.

Samsung S1050 takes great macro shots. Minimum focal length of 1cm with full manual control (including focus.) 10 megapixels, and for less than $200.

That said, anything with RAW capability is going to be a big plus for tank shots.
