Ok so I don't know all that much about cameras but I have a rebel xti that I would like to get a really good macro lens for. Any suggestions? I currently have a Tamron (IF) 28-300. Thanks Gina

For aquarium work (as well as general macro work) it's tough to beat the Canon 100 f/2.8.

Great picture....
So does canon 100 macro lens fits any of the new model canon SLR's?
What is the cost of the macro 100? Thanks

It fits ALL of the new model Canon SLR's. Expect to spend $450-$600. The only question of a Canon lens not fitting a camera is the "EF-S" mount. These are typically cheaper lenses designed for the cheaper cameras, specifically with an APS-C sized image sensor, such as the Rebel-Rebel Xsi and 20D-50D. The expensive cameras i.e. 5D or 1D(s) series are not compatible with these lenses. The Xti will work with every Canon lens made in the last decade or so.

If you check some other recent threads about macro photograph in the photography section, you will find some other suggestions. The Canon 100mm looks like an really excellent lens. There are several non-Canon lenses around this length which are also extremely good macro lenses: Tamron 90, Tokina 100, Sigma 105. They cost around the same price as the the Canon. For a bit more money, you could get the Sigma 150mm. You won't go wrong with any of these choices. The Canon is an EF lens and will fit all recent Canon's, including the full frame cameras.

I don't really agree with the generalization that the EF-S are "cheaper" lenses. The only cheap EF-S lens is the 18-55 kit lens. There are plenty of cheaper EF mount lenses than there are EF-S. The only difference is the EF-S is made for the APS-C bodies as you have mentioned though it has nothing to do with price.

On another note, the Canon 100mm is an excellent lens. I used one for years and was happy with it. I also have the EF-S 60mm and Sigma 150mm and those are equally as sharp, it all depends on how much reach you want.

Can you provide more feedback on the Canon 100mm vs Sigma 150mm? Aside from the focal length, are there any noteworthy differences between the lenses?

There are only 7 EF-s lenses total made by Canon, while 100 EF lenses exist. A couple of the EF-S lenses are bound to be considered "better" than some of the EF mount lenses.

EF-S is designed specifically for the cheaper model cameras. Canon is targeting a population of amateur photographers who are often more concerned with cost than they are quality. The 10-22, 17-55, and 60mm are all are great performers optically, but they all sacrifice basic build quality along with other attributes, which has everything to do with price.
