Best option for lighting?

What can I buy for 150$?

Without specifics about your tank size (dimensions) and intended livestock, nobody can accurately help answer that question. Perhaps it would be more helpful for you to start your own thread with specifics and goals for your tank to get the answers you're looking for. :)

No moral issue, but performance based. It isn't like we are keeping endangered species (well, mostly). I did have one question for Ron where I quite confused, which he never really answered, when he said that his lighting choice was more for him than the corals. This did not make sense to me since 1). he otherwise does not seem this way, and 2). he has talked a bit lately about adding in T5s which means that he noticed something that the corals were missing (no idea what) and wanted to make it better.

If coral health, growth and color are the main objective, then MH or T5 are going to be the best for the person - heat can be managed and there is no electrical savings in the end for most folks. If they want some of the blacklight, different color all the time, thunderstorms, control them from the couch, etc. then LED are probably going to be the best as long as they are OK with not being able to keep some coral and clams that will not flourish under LEDs. It is possible that a blend of a few different kinds of light might be good. The two are not equal... and after this long it looks like they might never be equal. The argument that "they both can grow coral" is as dumb as comparing a diet of all McDonalds to a balanced diet even though "they both can grow humans."

@ron reefman, I heard through the grapevine you have a tank for sale. I'm in the market. I'm interested in having a custom one built but what do you have?

Well I said I was going with the ATI but now that I've read up on the reefbreedeers Photon 48-V2 and read reviews and all, I think I like the idea of getting a pair of those more.

Search for Big E, Copps and most of the TOTMs in the past few years - I think that they do a good job of keeping the photos real looking. Just like anything, the colors get messed up with photographs.

If you want to go with MH, go to Hamilton directly. Upgrade to M80 ballasts and run 250W Radium bulbs in 250W output. This is a best-of-breed combo that every other light company tries to be like. If you decide that MH/T5 combo is right for you, that is a great light.

Thanks for the sound advice!!

You're okay with recommending 250 watt MH over 400 watt MH for a 30" tall tank?

Whoa. I thought I was getting good advice. Is there really that much difference? I said 30" deep but there will be a 4" sandbed so you have to factor that in.. I think I am going to go with this, as it provides a MH/T5 combo solution - http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/4-ft-cebu-sun-250w-lighting-system.html and I can always hang it closer to the front of the tank and add a dual or quad supplemental LED light later since it is going to be 30" deep

.

I mean 30" wide, not deep

In your tank specs, you gave the dimensions of 48x30x30, that's where I got the 30" tank height from. In my MH days, I ran 2x250 watt MHs over a 75 gallon tank at 48x18x21.

I guess, since you're running a mixed reef, your 250s along with the with the T5 supplementation would be okay. My concern is really about depth penetration for your 30 inches of height for your tank.

But it will only be 24" since there's going to be a 4" sandbed..

You should be okay. Just one thing to think about is how high you will have to hang the fixture in order to cover the 30" front to back span as well. That fixture hanging height will also influence the depth penetration.

I don't know where you may have heard that, but I haven't had a tank for sale for about 6 months and that was the leaking 180g tank I took down and replaced with a new 125g CAMLight tank.

Sorry. There are regularly tanks for sale on our local club website forum at SWFMAS.com.

Good luck with your search.
