I would like to be able to pick the sizes and shapes that I want as well. But local fish stores usually do not have high quality live rock. If I order high quality live rock I get and almost instant cycle. And there is lots of cool stuff to look at. You can basically start stalking your tank almost immediately.
Yeah, every LFS I've visited has had rock that honestly looked like they took dry base rock and left it in the tank for a few weeks. Of course if people want to start a tank that way, thats totally fine, but just buy the dry rock yourself!
Calling wet base rock "live rock" is dishonest IMO. Live rock has stuff growing on it - coralline algae, macroalgae, sponges - and stuff living inside it -- crabs, amphipods, worms. I have never found real live rock for sale at a LFS. Only wet base rock.
Yeah anymore I guess it's pretty difficult for the most part to find actual live rock in an lfs. Some of them will cycle dry Rock before they sell it. I guess in that case you could call it cured/cycled Base Rock. But yeah I agree calling that type of product live rock is a bit nefarious. I suppose some could argue that it is alive with bacterial LOL
