Best Powerheads for a 55 gallon

I am going to try out SPS corals in my established 55 gallon. What would you folks recommend for flow? I was looking at the Tunze nanostreams that will be comming out soon. Any recommendations?

modded Mj or Seio 820/1100 will be fine for your 55. Im running Seio 1100 / 620, modded MJ1200 on my 75g and my sps loved it..

How deep is your sand bed? I have a fully stocked 55g SPS reef and sand sux when your trying to increase your flow. I would hide 2 maximods in your rockwork and maybe another two on the walls. You won't need it all to begin but when those acros start growing, you'll DEFINATELY need it. :)

Charlie, I've got a tunze, and honestly, its a waste of money. It costs more, puts out less flow, uses more electricity, and is bigger, than the maximod next to it.

Rich, I have some mj mods coming, I can't wait to try them!!! .. My only problem has been reports (creditable) that they will not hold up to "wavemakers".. (and he was asking for the "best")

Thanks folks for the suggestions, I think I am leaning towards the tunze nanostreams. Question is which model? The 6025 will pump 660 gallons an hour maybe two of those would work great. Or 2 6045 which pumps out 1,189 gallons an hour. I do have a 2 inch sand bed and would have to position those so they wouldn't create a sand storm. I will be starting out with frags.

the only 2 in-tank pumps that interest me these days are the vortec and the nanostream. i used to run a ghetto-tank with cheap stuff cobbled together and DIY'd, but i'm over it. now i prefer to pay more upfront and keep my hands out of the tank. polario might also be interesting, but i haven't heard enough about it other than the interzoo video.

i had a maxistream (one of the purchased kits) that a friend loaned me for a while to play with. made surprising flow, but hummed more than it should have and with the swivel mount and magnet it stuck ~8" into the tank. that meant the flow didn't really spread out and develop till it was 1/2way across my tank. my vortech on the other hand spreads flow out within a few inches of the outlet, which itself is only a few inches from the glass. there is no comparison to the kind of flow it produces, plus the ability to turn it up and down by turning a knob on the drive electronics makes it 'best' imo. this is all not even counting the controller that is due next year.

manderx, how much flow spreads out is a factor of nozzle design, and nothing else. THe vortex, etc, are just prop pumps, like the maximod. A maximod can be created to exactly match any setting of the vortex.

Mine stick out about 3" from the glass. You're taking a poor example of one of your friend's DIY projects and projecting it on a whole class of items.

Mine are dead silent. And CERTAINLY take up less space than my tunze, which is friggen ginormous.

DeltecRUles, I'd stay away from the nano-streams. Theyre just simply not big enough for a tank that size.

Get the biggest one. they are controllable ---makes a big differance -you will find out..
Deltec rules, ask your buddies on the deltec forum-- see what they say..? (mj=remora)

I was actually a little under-whelmed by the maximod when I saw it at matt's place. With all the hype I thought it would move more water than it did. The vortech blows it out of the water, both in velocity, width of flow, and sheer water movement.

If I had the money, I'd go with the vortech. I don't so I will probably do a maximod.

I saw a vid of the vortech on controller, and that was riiiidiculous.

WELL.. I HAVE A 55 G SPS TANK...WITH TUNZE 6000 WITH CONTROLLER, MAG 5 RETURN , SEIO 620 AND A SEIO 820 OR 1100 ON THE WAY

BUT...

when the tunze nanostreams come out i am all over that ****.....55g and nanostreams are gonna go together like peanut butter and jelly...you can get alot of them and disperse them to get that high flow and chaotic flow..on controllers....easily hidden or not too big like the 6000 i have now......they are gonna be the best thing to happen to a 55g-90g tank.

1200 gph x 4 or 5 or however many is not enough flow for a 55g???? whoever said that you ought to be ashamed of yourself!!!!!!!

get the nanos..but are they out yet????? if they are you better get in line because i am buying all of em

I was going to go with either two 6045's or 2 6025's. Which of the two would you rather go with. By the way I wonder how long the waiting list are on these pumps. I better get on the waiting list or I will be waiting forever!!

Anyone...

Would 2 MJ1200 mods be crazy on a 36" tank? would 2 MJ900's be better? I plan on keeping my SEIO820 + my returns of course...

Scott - I would recommend the Tunze products. Get the larger of the 2 and a controller. You can turn down the output on the larger ones until your frags grow to colonies, but you cannot increase the flow from the smaller ones past their max. I own 2 of the 6100s and have been extremely satisfied with the quality of product and superior level of customer service.

I have no personal experience with the maxijet mods, however a friend has 2 running in a 55 prop tank. He has been having trouble with them on a wave timer. I am not counting them out yet as I think he needs to do a little adjusting, but I will not be replacing my streams with them. The amount of flow generated will surprize you and the price is right (both initial and cost of opperation), but without reliable control they have their limits.

i would like to see a pic of that. only way i could see that would be if the pump is mounted sideways against the back glass. not a very usefull way to mount it imo.

i measured last night and it was 7" (so i was off 1"). and it's not a DIY that one of my friends did. like i said in my post it was one of the purchased kits, which is what most people are probably going to go with, so it's actually a very good example 'to project on a whole class of items'.
