best protein skimmer

ok im sure this has been discussed like 1000 times but i am feeling lazy and dont want to sift through the 9000 threads the search came up with.

would aprreciate advise on best skimmer ( without breaking the bank ) for my 55 gal.

has to be HOB as no sump planned.

overkill is not a bad thing if it only means a couple extra clams.

I was reading through some of the suggestion threads and this is what I got out of it.

Coralife, Sea Clone, ect. (anything around 100-150 bucks) - sucks the big one.

Vertex, ASM - Decent

Tunze, BubbleMaster, Reef Octo - Awesome

Deltec - Damn Good

well my reef octopus nwb 110 was only $135 & it's awesome, however it's in sump only, they do make hob's as well, you can't go wrong with an octopus, tried & true

I'm using the Reef Octopus lx1000s HOB on my 46g QT and its a great skimmer. The only drawback is the size (huge).

i wonder why the cpr areo force never gets a mention? the thing works for me. they
even have a new improved model with black acrylic.

it pulls out gunk appropriately for the size of tank i have it on. plus you are still going to
want to run gfo in a hang on the back reactor too.. because a skimmer alone will never keep
phosphates down as low as you want them.. and doing large water changes often in a heavily
stocked sps tank is a good way to tick off your corals.. unless you are also dosing and
keeping your levels in sync with your change water...

ahh reef keeping. such fun ;-)
