Best return pump?

When was the last time you logged onto the forum to a thread titled "My Eheim is dead!" :lolspin:

Exactly.

I understand the allure of the price point. And if you're just getting into the hobby and want to minimize that initial investment to see if you'll enjoy it, I understand that too. Just understand that the Jebao's are not high quality pumps.

When I upgraded from a biocube to a 60 cube the DC pumps were just coming on the market. The prices were awesome and initial reports were that they were so quiet and added very little heat if placed in sump. So I jumped on either a Speedwave or Waveline and other than the flow being nowhere near advertised it was a decent pump.

But then we started seeing the early failures on forums. We like to travel and while I had a friend in the hobby that would check my tank at a call it was still something I worried about. So, I started researching pumps again and the common refrain, at least for my sized tank, was Eheim, Sicce, and possibly Magdrives.

Replaced my DC pump with an Eheim that, while I've taken it out to clean it a couple of times, has never needed to be cleaned. It's never failed to start for any reason. It just keeps running.

Meanwhile, that now backup DC pump failed as a water mixing pump less than 6 months later.

I'm embarking on a 220 build now and picked up a used Sicce in great shape for $50. Plan is to get a Fluval SP to replace it and then make the Sicce the backup. I'm not trusting what will likely be 25 or so fish and who knows how much in corals to a DC pump not made by Red Dragon or Abyzz. And I can't afford one of those anyway much less 2 lol!
