Yes, heat packs also need to be wrapped. My main reason for wrapping the heat pack is so the paper will absorb "some" water should there be a small leak during shipping. If the heat pack gets wet its done. I also wrap my heat pack according to how much heat I need for that shipment. A lot of paper if I need a little heat and a little paper if I need a lot.

This is my source for heat and cold packs: http://superiorenterprise.com/

i know that marine depot live ships all in 1/3 water and 2/3 air and since they are a sponcer for reef central they should know how to ship frags or corals. if you need to ask more about it then ask them.

shipping clams???? anyone???

When my clams were shipped to me from Clamsdirect there was nothing seemingly special about the shipment or acclimation. Same as has already been mentioned (but def don't ship dry! lol!) If I recall, the bags were about 1/3 full with water. They were shipped fedex first delivery.

Ill just add something ive been doing lately with great succes in this super cold weather

Ive been putting two heat packs OUTSIDE the cooler underneath it, and the one taped to the inside top lid several inches away from any bags

have managed to keep everything high 70's in a couple boxes shipping to and from 10-20 degree weather

just thought Id post it as Im pretty pleased with that result, and as we know too many heat packs inside the cooler is more dangerous than letting it get really cold

I am getting ready to order some heat packs and supplies. Do I want to just get the 40hr packs or would a few of the 20 or even 12 hr versions be a good idea too?
I have had frags shipped to me in the small 3x10 bags and for frags, that seemed to work very well. I was planning on the 3x10 size for the small frags and then getting some of the 6x12 and 6x5 black liners to use for larger pieces and possible to put several of the 3x10 size in.
Any suggestions from you with more experience? I am in Northern Utah and it is COLD right now. Do I need to use more than one 40hr pack or maybe a mix of a 20 and a 40?

Thanks,

Dave

The shorter the duration of the pack the hotter the surface temp will be. Its important to consider the destinations climate too. I've shipped from So.Cal to the midwest and used two 40-hr packs lightly wrapped in a paper towel and separated from the bags with popcorn and had good results.

Both ends of the trip are high teens to low twenties as a low. The box will be fairly small. One or maybe two 40hr?

Does anyone ever use the 20hr or should I just get the 40hr versions?

FedEx in the area where I work is THE WORST. Once too many times I've seen the following:

-Drive-by's, then when I track the shipment, they'll state business is closed.
-FedEx guys on my route dropping our regular electronic hardware onto the street from the back of the truck.

Yes this is the FedEx Express guys. I don't have anything against the company, per se, but I have lots of problems with the surly & arrogant guys on my route. The FedEx Ground guys that serve me, who are awesome by the way, even say that those guys drive and double park like donkey holes.

I prefer UPS Next Day Air for my live good deliveries. I haven't had a problem associated with mishandling or drive-by's. A+ in my books!

Sorry, the point I'm trying to make is that sometimes you might want to ask the buyer, if he/she has a preference, unlike most online frag dealers.

Again, boo to FexEx!

Don't package how saltwaterfish.com does. I ordered a couple ORA pieces, pearlberry and oregon torusa. Both bags had ice packs directly on top of them, they were wrapped in paper, but still the water measured 70 degrees when it got to me, which who know's how much colder it got. Both frags still had all their color, but had a little white dusting on them, the tortusa RTN'd over night, and the Pearlberry is half RTN'd. I'm fighting for a refund. Just needed to vent...

where can I buy Styrofoam box and a box that can fit a styrofoam box in. I'm looking for boxes that can fit small frags, like at 12-15inches

I buy these. Thick walled to give you true control of the temp for the trip and a nice overall package without having to scrounge around for boxes and or coolers.

Cool, thanks. For shipping, how does it work, like when you pack ready for shipping, how can you guarantee that it ship out the day you want?

About dry shipping... i dnt like it at all! I used to work at a LS and we used to get corals without water....and most of the time they wouldnt do good in the tanks
