I was wondering what would be the best shrimp to keep in a reef tank.
Right now I have a coral banded in my 60 gallon but I have read pretty bad stuff about them and also that little guy is not much fun since he's only active at night when they lights are off.
i have a cleaner shrimp and a couple peppermint shrimp. the cleaner is always out in the open and will swim to the surface when i feed the tank. the peppermints only really come out of the rocks when i feed or at night. only bad thing about shrimp is they like to rob LPS and anemones of food so keep that in mind.
Ditto re the cleaner shrimp. They're fun to watch and have great personalities, but make sure they have a chance to eat first before you feed your corals.
I like my peppermint shrimp and am looking into getting a cleaner shrimp. If you dont have fish who like to dine on little shrimp, sexy shrimp are beautiful and fun to watch.
I love periclemens petersoni, but you can never find them, purple spotted haloitus shrimp are a very closely related species but not quite so nice to look at.
You rarely see most of them unless you have 3 or more, your tank has to be failry big to hold that many, they will terrorize most other shrimp, and they are expensive. They are great cleaners however and very striking.
I have a pistol shrimp and yellow watchman combo and they are by far my favorite tank inhabitants besides the coral. The shrimp is uber intelligent as he is always active and looking for shells and things to help build his little condo. He also does an awesome job of keeping the sand in his area stirred up.
I also actually have another pistol shrimp in the tank too and i plan on getting a yasha haze goby for him as soon as i can find one. Without the goby symbiote the shrimp tends to be pretty cryptic.
Cleaner shrimp are cool but the pistol shrimp is much more interesting cause he is always working and doing things.
Cleaner shrimp are great!!!!! BUT they steal food. I usually have to give each (I have 2) a small piece of salad shrimp to eat before/while feeding my corals. Only during coral feedings are they a pain, otherwise perfect.
Pistol shrimp and pepermint shrimp kept 'disappearing' from my tank. I suspect my brittle star was eating them . . . good luck.
Pistol shrimp are usually pretty chill - they tend to hide a lot. If you can find a paired up shrimp and goby, it's worth the money. They are so cool to watch. Our pair has quite the elaborate tunnel system dug into our tank. If you look up at the bottom from underneath, it looks like an ant farm does.

Sexy shrimp and any of the Periclimenes species do not hide, are not agressive, are beautiful, interesting, and don't add much biomass. Sexy shrimp will hang out in small groups of 3 to 5 if you have a bunch of them.
I love Peppermint Shrimp, they don't bother each other or anyone else, you can keep them in groups if you want. They are beneficial scavengers. I also have a coral banded shrimp which is cool to watch because of his big stance and appearance.
