best size for web viewing - 1280? 1600? 1920?

I'm fortunate enough to have a nice 1920x1200 Apple display and when I take photos to post online for others to view I'm tempted to size the images BIG since i'm viewing them that way as well... BUT, i'm wondering what everyone might recommend for a suitable size for others to enjoy. 1280x1024 was the maximum resolution within reach of most people but all LCD displays made today are capable of 1600x1200 (or higher).

I've been wondering if I should scale the images for 1600x1200 or smaller at 1280x1024? An image that is 1200 pixels high makes for nice viewing but if the viewer's monitor is only 1280 pixels wide then there's a lot of scrolling involved to see the whole thing...

Anyway, just wondering what everyone thought, recommended, etc. thanks

About 800 pixels on the long edge.

Probably 1024x768 would be the most common size. And possibly somewhat of a standard. But I'm all about resolution personally. :D

:) Yep, 800 on the long side the vast majority of the time. Big enough to be seen comfortably on most peoples monitors but low res so its relatively useless for anything besides online viewing.
