LXXero,
I can’t believe my case is so similar to yours – came from same planted tropical fish tank for last 10 years in a 4’x2’x2’ 120G tank.
I reduced only one of the 3 bulkheads from 1.5” down to 1”. This reduction gives me vertical distance between the siphon pipe and the middle pipe (not the dry emergency which is the tallest). I didn’t have the limitation you had from the sump (I don’t have a sump yet), but I imagine your two 1” pipes will give you even more vertical drop so your system will be even more stable.
a. The 2 pass through bulkheads (mounting the overflow to the tank): reduce both from 2" bulkheads to 1.5" bulkheads.
b. Out of the 3 drain bulkheads, keep 2 of them at the original 1.5" size, but reduce the 3rd bulkhead down to 1" bulkhead. The middle and left drain are the two larger (1.5") bulkheads, and the one on the right side is the 1" bulkhead.
wow, we did go pretty similar. we both reduced the through holes to 2x1.5" bulkheads. I think 2x 2" is probably overkill, and the bigger holes are just bigger weak points, so it really does make some sense to keep the size down if it's not needed. I think even 2x1.5 will be plenty overkill. I kept all the bulkheads 1.5" and if i want to reduce them, i'll just use adapters as needed. you went 24" and I kept it at 18", I talked about going to 24" to my LFS, he said bigger is better, but 18" is probably enough, I didn't want it taking up too much space so I decided to just go with 18 in the end.
man i didn't mention whether to use threaded bulkheads or what not - hopefully whatever he gives me works out, lol. I'm not too worried about the output bulkheads though since I can swap those out easy enough.
I'm hoping it comes by friday so I can get it over to the LFS on saturday when the owner is in...he said they usually take like 3-5 days to make.
the sump is just an aquon proflex 4, and I am wondering if the stock setup on that will be OK or if i will need to modify it. It's design is almost intended to quiet / prevent bubbles from a normal durso or what not, but I doubt it was designed explicitly for a full siphon rig like I'm going to be doing. It drains the 2x1" tubes out into two small cylindrical chambers, that in turn flow over into some filter socks. The output tubes definitely sit under water more then a few inches, so I might have to cut the pipes down to get the full siphon working better, though I guess we'll see, they sit in pretty small chambers so i'm wondering if the reduced volume might mean the height doesn't matter as much. this is the one here, you can see what i mean with the 2x1" inputs. It wouldn't be that hard to upgrade them I'm sure:
if i was doing it again, i might consider that trigger systems emerald, but it probably costs way more.
