we're all searching .......but what is the best skimmer for a 400-500 gallon heavy stocked reef tank?

lower electric so I'd like to dop beckett twins for starters?

watch your call.

thanks..........

I would go with a Volcano built by Spazz. There are a few people on RC that have them and love them. I'll have mine in about a month. Best of all they have a low power draw.

second on the volcano, i've done alot of research and that skimmer blows away everyone else in terms of price, efficiency and performance

yaktop, How much watts does your skimmer use now? I am currently using Bubble Master 250 and Deltec AFP 600 for a heavily loaded (4"+ Blue Tang, 6"+ Sailfin Tang, 3"+ Purple tang, three 8" long Engineer gobies, six 2-3" clowns, Mandrin dragon, two 3"+ misc gobies, and 8" Regal Angel with lots of SPS tank of total volume 400G. My NO3 is 1.5 - 5 PPM

I use a etts now with a genx but thats with my 250 system. new tank on order so I need to upgrade.

everyone thanls for the information. never even heard of spazz, any others to consider ?? low draw is nice.....had a single beckett they work well but like to juice..

this is a bump. Those skimmers look good but are large electrical consumers.

any suggestions or those who use ones with less electrical demands ?

TIA

which skimmers are you referring to? the volcano runs on a dart needlewheel, very low electrical consumption. if you want to spend more money, research h&s, deltec and bubble king. just do a search on this forum for protein skimmer, there are about 3-4 threads on which skimmers people prefer.

cool. I've tried googling various combinations for this skimmers web site, do you it or a vendor that carries.

thanks, sounds like I'm looking for.

the volcano runs more cfm, has more dwell time , less wattage, cost sometimes half as much as those others. only negative is the size its taller then the others at 6 foot.

oh oh, that could be a problem, I assume the drain from the skimmer must be higher than the sump water level? if thats the case I probably dont have the cieling height. :(

glutton for punishment: You could build your own...that's what I did with just a router, a table saw, and my oven. :) Mine runs at just 120W, but ceiling height could be an issue since it is a counter-current air stone skimmer with about 50g capacity. But, there is no reason why you couldn't build one to suit the space you have available.

It is really not that hard to do, and a very rewarding project to be sure. And it's nice to tell visiting reefers, "Yeah, I built that bad boy!" :D

You can check out pics of it
HERE. You can see some of the construction pics and its evolution. I now do not use the Weatherson shut down method and have instead gone to a float switch that turns off the air pump. I have it set to pull out about 1 gallon per day, which is sort of a medium wet skimmate and will vary slightly based on salinity.

I don't believe it is better than a SPAZZ skimmer, but it does me quite well and is very simple to use, with very little tuning. In fact I rarely need to change the water flow through it.

I think SPAZZ skimmers are some of the best built for larger systems (way better IMO than Deltec, Bubble King etc.), and the Barr Aquatics/Austin Oceans units are the best for smaller systems. They really are well built and pull the gunk like no other I have seen in person.

Im using 2 Euroreef 250 for my 250 gallon sump..

come on people, I like the Volocano but a six foot height doesnt cut it with my system. I sent a PM to Spazz, maybe he has a shorter model. Am I left with Deltec?
