Best skimmer for a large tank

My vote is for BK (Bubble King)... H&S also makes a nice skimmer... If you can I would go with a Volocano... I have tossed around selling my BK400EXT for a Volocano... The BK only pulls like 68w total...

Hey Shawn,

How do you like the BK ? Im in the market for a new skimmer and would value your input.....

Regards

Paul.

Tunze has a new line of needle wheel skimmers out, the 9000 series. Each pump is supposedly good for 800 lph air, 350 gph water at 23w. The 9460 has 3 pumps, the 9480 has 4.

I'm going to try a 9440 on my 360g. It looks very efficient on paper, with a decent amount of air draw. I figure it's worth a try.

If I was going for tried and true I would have gone with an H&S all the way. Some friends of mine with a BK were skimmerless for over 2 months when their Red Dragon broke down (I'm not trying to stir anything up here and don't have any experience with BK personally, their experience scarred me off).

yaktop,

Check out the new skimmer by Sequence that uses the new ORCA (Dart) Needlewheel pump. This is a picture of it on a test run at Premium Aquatics:

Been awhile Paul :)

I like the BK alot... The unit is built very well... I will have to try to get a pic of what it pulls out... I feel that unit could produce/handle alot more bubbles, but then again I have been following alot of the newer needlewheel/mesh units out currently... As it stands my unit is almost two years old (if not older) even though it has only been used for about 7 months... So its kinda old school :) (not saying that is bad)...

Below is something new that Klaus is working on, I am hoping that he would offer an "upgrade" for the older customers so that they can take adavantage of the new and improved...

@spykes..
what i say : ... custom-mades Impellers for RD-Pumps. We injektion-molding the Impellers self... The brass-ring Impellers is only for ponds, the Laguna pumps are made for Ponds, not for tanks. It is not possible for remove the Impellers from the Ceramicshaft..... yor destroyed the shaft....
Thats the delivery-status from the shafts, without the carbon-bearings and without the impellers...
Keramikachsen1.jpg

We using Siliziumcarbide-bearings, the best and hardest bearingsmaterial for skimmers. The Pumps are running fast dry. It is very important to switch to onouther bearings... the standart carbon-bearings for Ponds, live max. 3-6 months...

come on people, I like the Volocano but a six foot height doesnt cut it with my system. I sent a PM to Spazz, maybe he has a shorter model.

I spoke with Spazz a few days ago. He told me he has a "shorty" that is 4 foot tall and a "tall" that is the 6 foot tall. Of course they hold different volumes of water and that may dictate what route you may want to go.

my volcano is 4 1/2 foot tall and is being used for a 600 gallon mixed reef, pulls about 2 gallons of nog a day

still trying to decide but I can get a pretty good discount on either a:

H&S A200X2XF1260 rated for 550 gal at 76W

or a

Euroreef RC500 rated for 500+ at 120W

what would you pick ?

Got any pics of yours?

I know quite a few people getting the shorties from Scott lately. but we love our 6' Volcano :). One thing about the Sequence one that Targareef posted is that it is using the AO Smith motor, not the Baldor... big red flag in my book to stay away from that one. That is also likely why they have kept that skimmer so short, any taller and it would overheat the shut down the pump.

In talking to Scott recently, he had over 15 orders for the "Shorties". Sequence makes those pumps special for his Volcano skimmers at Scott's request. Also, the Shorty utilizes the stock needlewheel from Sequence and doesn't require an air pump. The 6' model like Tom's come with a custom made Volcano needlewheel and requires the air pump. It was very interesting talking skimmers and reefs with Scott. Now I know why these skimmers and all the other equipment he builds is of such high quality.

I figured all this talk about the Volcano skimmers and only a handfull of people have seen them work so it was about time. Also this is only on a 380 tank, I've seen the stuff that your skimmer pulls WOW!

H&S would run circles aroung the Euro-Reef....

I run a H/S A250 and it dropped my trats to 0 from 30 in less then 2 months

And if you know chadfarmer I almost got a pic of Him kissing my skimmer right after I got it he liked it so much.

It is on about 800 gallons with about 40 fish heavy sps system.

Here is it running after about 12 hours

Sequence Skimmer

I went this route. :) for the price, performance, and the rating I think this is the best option. I've dealt with Jeremey at PA many times and feel comfortable with his endorsement. a comparable skimmer would had cost alot more and not save much watts. I turned out not to be a fan of multiple motors and the sequence is well proven. I have a 3200sw for a return. also the Volcano also runs the dart. I'm happy with the choice.

thanks for all the input.

janrowe- dont get confused and think that miller lite bucket is beer!!! hahaha

Well- everyone is going to have an opinion. My personal opinion (based on my personal knowledge) says to either go with a Deltec or a Bubbleking.

Deltec 702 or Deltec 902. Not sure which bubble king model.
