Best Skimmer

I'd like to hear opinions on a great skimmer for an SPS dominated 195 gallon tank with approximately 40 gallons sump volume.

Let's hear it. I've got 8 weeks to decide.

I like reefdynamics skimmers. I have 3 of them, one on my 75 gallon seahorse tank, 55 gallon tank and 180 gallon SPS and they do a great job. Start working like 10 mins. after I put them in. And skimmers is what he specializes in.

whats your budget?

Look for around 1700-2000lph air pull or more. Look for a good relible pump and body options like cone, bubble plate, silencer, overall quality etc.

Bubble king 200 and 250 internal or external .. and there is a lot of option..Deltec, Vertex, H&S, Skimz... But, I think, Bubble king is the best..

Budget right now fortunately is not an issue. I've been socking some money away for a couple of years. I told myself that when I did it next time..I would not skimp on equipment. I don't want to needlessly spend cash I don't have to though.

I currently run a SRO XP2000 on my 150. It does a decent job but I really don't know if I can say that a cone is truly better than a regular bodied skimmer. Some of the Bubble Kings look really nice but I know that replacement pumps are as much as some skimmers brand new.

Keep 'em comin folks.

Well, a lot of good recommendations here.

Buckeye, I didn't even consider the ATB 1050.

So far, I think I've narrowed my selection to the following...but not necessarily in this order:

ATB 1050
Super Reef Octopus XP 3000
SWC 230
Royal Exclusiv 250 Vertex Alpha Cone

I don't know how lph relates to scfh as it relates to air pull, so if someone could help me out understanding that I'd appreciate it.

I realize that the SWC 230 and SRO XP 3000 are an obvious savings. Is there that much of a difference in performance spending the cash on the Vertex Alpha or ATB, or is it just the name and pump used? I'd also like to hear thoughts on the reliability of each of the above pumps. I've been running my Bubble Blaster pump on my SRO XP2000 now for about 8 months with no issues, but I really have nothing else to compare it to.

Why not the SRO or SRO XP (cone) 5000....still way cheaper than alpha 250?

Not that the vertex 250 is a bad choice...seems good too.

I don't even think I'll be able to build a foam head in the SRO XP5000 in a 195. I've had way too much skimmer before with an ETSS 900. It would wait forever to skim anything. I want something slightly larger than what I need that can do a great job.

This is the problem I seem to be having with my SRO XP6000sss on a mixed reef of about 250-275 gallons total water.

LPH stands for Liters per Hour and SCFH stands for Standard Cubic Feet per Hour. They both more or less is a measurement of air flow and can be easily exchanged. For example, to convert SCFH to LPH, you multiply for 28.326.

33 SCFH = 934.758 LPH
100 SCFH = 2832.6 LPH
143 SCFH = 4050.618 LPH
... etc

To convert LPH back to SCFH, you divide by 28.326. A couple more skimmers to consider would be I-Tech and Warner Marine.

1 ATB 1050a
2 ATB elegance
3 ATB deluxe 10.5

Just kidding but, not really.... We are all just going to reccomend why has worked for us or what we think is "the best".
I reccomend you try finding ways to get hands on with the skimmers your interested in. Seeing them in person really helps.
