best stores in Sacramento

i'm sort of new to sacramento and wanted your opinions of the LFS's in Sacramento. i went to Exotic and their zoanthids look terrible. half of their polyps are closed up. what's your favorite LFS for purchasing zoanthids?

In the same general area I'm fond of Jo Jo Aquarium on Stockton Blvd, just north of 47th ave. There tanks are some of the cleanest around, and everything is labeled and priced clearly. Not the largest selection, but they have some orange bam bams and arctic turquoise zoas right now.

To keep this thread from becoming a bashing thread..
Please don't post about bad stores in the area;

First off it's your opinion, others may think differently;
And second we don't want to portray the image as a club that this store sucks because....

Keep it positive only...
If you really want to find the best stores in town visit them :)
I make the rounds once a month to all the major stores in the area on a Sat.

There's a list of many local fish stores on the MARS website.
Check it out, then come back and tell us which stores you LIKED the best and why (Good positive stories).
If you don't care for a particular store don't go there, and take them off your list of stores to visit..

Also the day you go may make a large difference, if a store did a large water change that day many things will look bad, or if the corals just got put in the tanks a few hours ago they may look bad. There's many reasons why things may look bad on one day and not the next..

So welcome to the area.. We have a LOT off great stores in the area. I'm quite surprised at how many we have for the seemingly small number of hobbyists we have (Compared to the BA)

exotic is the biggest LFS i've ever been in and i like the way they have their coral tanks set up. they have lots of nice sps and yumas there. i am only referring to their zoanthid tank. i've been there 4 times and each time i go there, i say to myself, "i'm going to buy some zoos" but end up leaving with nothing.

any way, my aim was not to bash any particular store. it was to know from a fellowship of reefers where they go to buy healthy zoos in the sac area. i wish i could make my rounds and go to every store in the area, but want to tap into this network to ease the amount of aimless driving. some stores in the bay area house super sps corals and other have really nice zoa tanks.

i think positive comments are important, but feel critical comments should not be stifled.

thanks pete, i'll check out jojo. if anyone else can recommend a good LFS for zoos, please let me know. thanks!

Your reef in roseville is the place to shop if you want healthy and high end stuff.

I'd say Your Reef.

199 Cirby
Roseville 95678

Lots of frags SPS,LPS & some cool Zoanthids.

And a ton of high end stuff.

First off Exotic has some AMAZING Zoo's and are very generous on their amounts and prices. The only problem is they get seen so much that you really have to be there quick when they get in as they sell fast due to their prices!!!

Yourreef and Coral Reef Shop are another great source of premium quality zoo's at bargain prices. Many times at CRS you can buy an entire large colony of zoo's for as little as 20 bucks or a frag for as little as 12!! Yourreef has some amazing zoo's at all times as well and John will always give you a deal to fit whatever your budget can handle!

I second Steve on the POSITIVE COMMENTS ONLY CAMPAIGN!!!!
When using the M.A.R.S. forum it is actually probably best to stifle "critical" comments and asessments because it leads to hurt feelings and arguing. For every person who thinks one thing about ant certain store, there are 10 others who love that place. If you feel that a store is not up to par, just don't go there. If you feel you need to tell others then feel free to do so, just please do not use the club's forum for that purpose. We are currently repairing a lot of burned bridges with our LFS neighbors and every negative comment undoes 10 positive ones.

Good Luck and happy hunting!

Yes, POSTIVE Comments. These posts can, in a very strong way, be referenced to the MARS club as a whole. I'm sure we can all agree we want the club and the various LFSs to be on good terms. Please don't bring the the MARS club into it because you may want to post critical comments on this forum.

So far everyone's been great at keeping this thread positive. I just wanted to post a very important reason why the old adage of "If you don't have anything nice to say..." still applies.

http://www.marineaquarist.org/AboutUs/OurSponsors/tabid/260/Default.aspx
is a good place to start looking for LFSs.

I agree... check out the MARS sponsor list. If you can't do them all in one weekend, do one at a time when you can.

I have found that at different times each of store has great stuff.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, I would like to hear some of the negative comments. If your just keeping it "positive" to keep your MARS discount your doing a disservice to all MARS members and the LFS. Just my opinion.

It's not to keep the discount, or the freebies they give us.
It's all about building a relationship with stores vs the club and it's members as a whole. Not 5 members over in the corner who dislike a place for one reason or another.

It's to keep one or two members from whipping up a negative frenzy, and making it look like the entire club hates a LFS, when in fact it's prolly .05% of the clubs opinion.

Since you're new here you don't I don't think you'll understand what I'm talking about.

If you have negative things to say, please do so elsewhere.
NOT in our club forum.

If you'd like to spread negativism, perhaps this is not the place for you then? One of the MAIN reasons for this club, is to build relationships that will help further the hobby. I personally think it paints a bad picture on all members who may disagree.

Bad blood takes a long time to wash off and all it takes to spill some is one tiny comment in this very public place. I can tell you first hand that upon feeling strongly about an issue I have made statements here without realizing their impacts that I later wished I could take back. I'll probably regret this one too.

everyone has their own opinions and i don't think adults should get offended. take opinions for what they are worth. i've seen different opinions on this forum about lighting systems, fish species, skimmer choices, etc but no one has ever said "keep it positive." however, after reading funman's first posting on this thread, i realized the importance of positive comments and the relationships between LFS's and MARS; hence, i made concessions in my second post.

i think this MARS forum should have a "must read" sticky on their goals, mission, or matra. also, a list of MARS admins would be helpful. it's sort of like, who are you and why are you telling me to post in a certain way on an open forum. newcomers, which i think are welcomed, do not know what might be considered a "right" or "inappropriate" post. i think it's a very reasonable request from funman and other's to keep it positive, but without knowing who you are and what your intentions are, it might create a situation like timmy's comment.

any way, again my original intention was to know other reefer's opinions on their favorite LFS for zoos. i apologize for creating more than was necessary. let's get this thread back on track and keep it positive on the forum or whatever on PMs. reasonable?

Might be off topic but thanks for posting the link kdblove_99, that site has some awsome zoo's I plan on getting a frag pack soon. Thanks again for a great link.
Steven

There is also a difference between bashing and the truth. I would hate for one of you guys to get infested with pests because someone was afraid to post the truth.

In the state of todays hobby, there are way too many people who are passing around pests without even knowing it.

True; that it is each persons responsibilty to treat their investments, but this is only one man's opinion as 99% of my posts are supportive ;)
