what is the best submersible pump for a return from a sump going up about 5 feet? i would like my sump or fuge to have about 900-1200gph. or does this seem to much?

I like the mag drives. I have a mag 12 and 9. You can use in or out of the water. I don't know if they are the best but I believe them to be a good and reliable pump.

I have an eheim 1262 on my 180 and it's perfect.(900gph)
Totally quiet and cool running.
3-5x turnover should be what you want for a sump.

I use a Mag 9.5. It has worked with no problems for two years. I am going to get an Ehiem or an Oceanrunner if it ever dies though.

Eheim, they are reliable and last forever.
Red Dragon, if you have money to blow, want quiet and don't mind having something less reliable and 10x's the price of an Ehiem.

i am actually looking at the ocean runner cuz it on sale at Drs. fostersmith for like only 80 buck. but it looks like it doesnt come with the small pipes for the return part? hmm so Eheim, Mag, and ocean runner. guess i'll have to decide out of those three.

IME, Eheims are the quietest and most relaible of submersible pumps. Comparing the Eheim 1262, OR 3500 and Mag 9.5 Eheim is the silent winner. Ask my wife as she like things dead silent...LOL!

Well looks like i wont be able to use Eheim because the hight gph is 900 and at 4fthead it goes down to under 700 and i am looking for something that does 900-1200gph pump. So guess the Mag will have to do.

Watch out for the "ratings". Eheim pumps flow more than the specs state, and Mag flows less. You will need a Mag12 to ~ equal the actial flow of an Eheim 1262. It will use more power and you will also need larger dia plumbing.

if you want 900 - 1200 GPH @ 4' head (why do you want that?), you should be using an external if possible.

When you get to a large flow pump, you are better going external if you can.

Is this for a return pump? Why so much flow? What size display/sump/fuge?

300gal display 80gal sump/fuge, yes i am looking for a return pump for the sump/fuge. 1200gph will only be about 4x the display. so its not that much flow actually after the head.

Ok, just wanted to be sure you weren't one of the many people looking to put a huge return pump on a small tank.

Do you have room for an external? There are several that would be in that size range. If you want submersible, there is also the Ocean Runner 6500

i do have room for external but dont want to drill my tank if i dont have to. Yeah i have seen the ocean runner but kinda leaning towards the Mag 18 because the oceanrunner makes you buy additional parts such as the male piece for the return line and another piece for the suction end.
