Bi Color Blenny

Is a bi color blenny really compatible with SPS coral and do they dig under everything?? I need a peaceful tank mate for a clown, royal gramma and a wrasse. What do you think?? Thanks

These guys are generally peaceful but will harass similar shaped fish like other blennies and gobies, especially once they've been in a tank for awhile and have established their territory. I think that you'd be OK since he's the last one added to your tank.

There is another thread asking about a tail spot blenny where the owner had problems with his bicolor blenny that he thought was reef safe but actually became a problem.

The responses about the tail spot blenny were very positive, so you may want to consider one of those. I've never had a bicolor in a reef but have had them in FO systems in the past and they mostly keep to themselves. I've read though that they could sometimes nip at stony corals.

I'd say wait until a few people with experiences with them in SPS systems post. These guys would be hard to catch without tearing apart your tank once you add them to a reef tank.

It just goes to show that a lot of fish are supposed to be reef safe but often certain individuals have a mean streak and just aren't reef safe after all. You could very well buy a bicolor and all could be well...many species are somewhat of a risk.

i have one and is great! mine likes to hide in the rock and hasnt done any digging... usually hides inside the holes in the rock... never knew that if he goes in one end of the rock he comes out the other haha

I was the one that had a problem with the bicolor. It nipped at a large clam that I had at the time. It didn't cause any real damage to the clam but it kept it partially closed. Other than that, it was a great fish. It didn't bother anything else. I had LPS, SPS, and soft corals at that time.

I have, so far, heard of noone else having the problem I had. All fish are individuals I guess. Mine never dug either. He spent his time in a small hole in the rock and would dart out every few minutes to get a bite of algae and cruise the tank. Then it would back into the hole again. I am pretty sure you will be fine with one.

I don't think they are "diggers". They're more like a barnacle blenny .. they like to find a hole or crevice to hang out in.

agreed.
IME Bicolor Blennies are secretive coral/clam nippers. Sometimes it takes years for an aquarist to realize what's going on.

Actually my bicolor hasn't nipped a single coral at all. He has lots of personalitys. Blennys are not diggers they are a perhing fish so digging is'nt a problem.
