Big Ben Grimm

O'Coralman

In Memoriam
Hi fellow Mantis fans.....I just got my new Mantis( I have several small ones). This bad boy is all of 12" and like ALL my manti is housed in Tuff box type clear plastic homes. I'll post a pic soon. He is named after The Thing...Ben Grimm of the Marvel Fantastic Four comic character. His motto was "It's clobberin' time" and judging by the size of his clubs he could split the thumb if givin' the chance. I'll post a pic soon. My smaller one of 4"(little Ben) cracked a 20H, the fat part of my tank cleaning tool ,and the prongs on my gravel tool. He has a new home too. Both were given to me by the local LFS....I spend enough $$$ there for my reef tanks and they were glad to be rid of them. I can't undestand as they are so coooool! Big Ben puts his eyes out of the water and walks around like that it's a trip.............later. I post pics this evening Steve:dance:

Isn't 12" much larger than any stomatopod gets? What species is it? When can I see pix?

Inquiring minds want to know.

he's a biggin'

he's a biggin'

They can....some species get bigger....I am at work now, so give me a few to get home and I'll post a pic. This guy(or girl) says "touch me if you are stupid" by just looking at him. No doubt he is a thumb splitter. I believe I read some species can get close to 18 ". I want one......tonite a pic will be posted. Ben is gray with bright yellow highlights. his clubs are an 1 1/2" long and his eyes are are about 1/2 the size of a dime.....Steve:dance:

if i remember right, Dr. Roy said that the largest stomatopod he has seen was a 12 1/2 inch Lysiosquilina

Ben..........

Ben..........

O'Coralman is back....got home late from Irish dance last night(i am a performing and competing Stepdancer as well as an Engineer). went to bed with intentions on pics on Ben before work. :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: My new boy was flipped over and.............:( .....was dead. I guess his size also ment he had run out his life span. I do not know how old he was but he was no youngster. He was only 10 1/2 " with clubs out....here he is or was.....hope pic attaches

Thanks..to all

Thanks..to all

I appreciate the :( ............Ben was just getting started,. He must not have adjusted like he needed.. I have had Little Ben...4" since last fall(he is electric green...and good and mean). My LFS is already lookin' for a biggin' for me as well as a couple of smaller ones. They are never sure of what kind and size will be shipped but, I'll take what comes:D ..cause they are  My reef tanks are full so collecting multiple Mantis meenies is next for me.Thanks again and I'll post new ones as I get them......especially if they are biggies...... The LFS I am lucky to live near gets me what I want and because I am loyal to them $$$$$ is not ever a big issue( I get a good discount) so my wait is only till next Tues. They do not need me to shill for them so I won't:strooper: .......Steve:dance:

I can't see the image from the gallery. For some reason it allows me to log in, but then fails to allow me access. I've been working on this for over a week with no joy, so givent the new way of handling images, it looks like I won't be able to provide any more ID's.

I can see a very small, dark thumbnail and the animal is definitely not O. scyllarus. I suspect it is Hemisquilla californiensis, but the image is just not sufficiently clear or large.. If that is the case, what temperature did you have it at. This is a cold water species that does best at 15-18 C. At 23 C, it dies after a few days.
