Big issue.

Just tell her you will put the DT downstairs after you finish the basement so it will have to be upstairs until then??? Then in 3-5 years when the basement is finished you will probably be ready for a new DT anyway.

Very interesting concept here.

My wife can be a firecracker at times, but she understands that the tank is my hobby. She's helped me numerous times with it when I needed someone's help holding something, lifting etc...... but it's still "my thing". Attempts to include her over the years in it leads to her just not wanting to. Understandable, it turns my wheels, just not hers.

But she understands it keeps me grounded and allows me to do what ever I want with it, tank up stairs in the living room.

Compromise is key. The only issues she had was "will the floor hold it" and "what if it leaks". Hence emergency drains and floor supports/doubling floor joists. (Which I would have done anyway)

If you can't come to agreement on upstairs, well downstairs is better than "no tank" and "no house" and "no wife". Your mileage may vary.

What is the main objection to having the tank upstairs? Does she want to put another piece of furniture there? Does she think it will smell? Water damage?

I agree with Flipper - downstairs is better than no tank.

I'm not sure my wife wants a tank upstairs in the new house. But, I've already laid the ground work for a big tank (like Nook size) in the basement I'll finish eventually.

As Sanford and Son as you've been, I imagine her concerns are more about aesthetics:D She might just want you downstairs out of her hair for some peace and quiet

Both could be possible. I haven't followed your build thread but my experience is women are form over function for sure.

You need to put the tank where you wanted it. In the corner by the TV. That's the best looking place for it. The idea of making it look as aesthetically pleasing as possible would definitely help your cause. Maybe if you showed her some nice furniture grade stand/canopy designs that she could pick from that might entice her .

Either way I would still put it in the original spot, you want to enjoy the tank while your home and relaxing, drinking a beer on the couch. With it in the basement that's not possible.

Hard to follow up that last disturbing post but this stand and canopy which hides everything is why I didn't catch grief for having the tank in our living room, in a woman's eyes it became a beautiful piece of furniture .

If I had in her words made it "look like a science lab" there would have been complaining. The kind of complaining that makes you hide the tank in a basement or perhaps drive off a bridge. Serious complaining.

As someone said earlier, with the ladies form wins over function.

Right on VSpeck and I will deny this entire conversation if it's presented to my wife.

My ol lady could bring a picture of this conversation to me and I would still deny it was me until she started shoving splinters under my nails or something. I will never admit I know what she wants I will always play dumb and apologize later!

It's not going to look like a science project. Atleast not in my eyes.

Nice, new reef tank there:) Beware, some black sands have metal in them which will stick to your magnet and scratch your glass.
