Big loss for the Area

I know that a lot of us locals ave heard of or have met Hugo (snipersps)...so bad news about his tank..
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=893606

It's something to learn from....maybe we could have a meeting sometime soon about ways to safeguard from events such as these. What types of backups can be use and how long are they good for....
I know I can't use my truck for electricity in a pinch, since my apt is too far from my parking space.. So I need to look into some kind of small gas generator or a batery powered backup...

In smaller tanks I use a 5 gallon bucket and siphon hose. Drain water, dump back in tank, repeat every hour or so. Battery powered air pumps certainly help too. I don't have anything big enough to justify buying a generator.

Interestingly enough I saw one guy on that thread link stated he should have posted that his power was out so others could of helped him out.... I'm not flaming anyone... just sharing a funny.

His main problem was a high bio load....40 fish died, which caused the crash. At some point I probably would have started thowing fish out to save the high end SPS he had.

However, he is well connected and have no doubts he will have a bigger and better setup with probably the very same rare pieces he had in no time. It ain't like hes going to leathers and browned acros again.

In fact I just realized he is one of the growers for Exoticreefs, with Tubs and ROAB. With partners like that.....come on

I could almost equate it to a celebrity crashing a Ferrari. It would be unrecoverable for anyone else, but a drop in the bucket for them.

Not to sound insensitive in any way shape or form, but I am sure he will bounce back easily, and don't get me wrong the loss in livestock is sickening.

Also about four months after I acquired my tank (already set up and established), our power went out for over two days due to lots of trees and subsequently power lines and my poor student neighborhood was low on priority for power re-establishment. I used cups by bailing and returning roughly hourly and battery powered air bubblers duirng that time and didn't lose anything even though it was over 90F in our house. I'm not a biologist but clearly maintaining dissolved oxygen - especially as temps rise is key.

Someone this winter lost much if not all of their tank due to power outage in a colder environment. Lots of discussion about how we spend so much on our tanks but very little on insurance (like generators or even something as simple as battery powered air pumps.) I suppose I should add battery powered fans to my list. I've got a small cash fund ready to run out and buy a generator if ever the need presents it. However, I still rent so I don't want extra stuff if I don't need it - I already have too much!!! (either that or I just don't have enough land... yeah that's it.)

I have like 5 fish in my 75, and don't care for about three of them.

Yeah, I think we leave the "insurance" stuff to last. I rent also still, so storing a generator, or even using it if I had it is out of the question.

We should do some research and find some cheap or build some back ups as a club project.....

Perhaps create a list of things to have or how to "save" your tank for various situations.

I still dont understand how you can spend so much money on a tank like that and not have some sort of emergency backup for it....I mean if you can spend 10,000+ on a tank, you can spend 1,000 for a generator.

thats so sad, it was such a beautiful tank...

He said that he did have a generator, but the the info coming from his power company kept promising that it would be up within the hour. By the time he realized they were full of hot air (pardon the pun) and he fired up the generator, it was too late, the damage had already been done. And we all know how that sort of a crash just feeds on itself and rolls downhill with frigthening speed.

well, on the "generator" topic I just got back with our new Interstate D-8 batteries. Each one will power our return pump (which feeds all our tanks, 2 props + display, and equiptment so no hydrogen buildup concerns in our calc, phos reactors, etc) and our chiller (which only draws 40 watts anyways) for about 4 days. We got 2 batteries, one for the tank and one for our refrigerator and fans in the house (by my calculations should also last about 4 days). On about the 3rd day I would start to panick and go looking for a generator, or just fill the car with gas and port the exhaust outside and run the invertors directly off of our SUV, I guess.

This has been mentioned in all the threads regarding Hugo's crash. It's a good lesson to preach, but don't 'kick a man while he's down':(

Eventually I think we all will experience it, kinda a rite of passage.

Along with

Cyano
Red bugs
Flat Worms
empy wallets
broken spirits
etc......

Just a matter of when not if.

A tank buddy program with someone who has the same interest livestock wise would be a good idea, split the cool stuff between each other with a garuntee to replenish each other after a loss.

Because thats been a question on everyones mind... Im not trying to kick him down, Its just the truth and with Sparkss response (which is the first I've seen) we get a little more insight as to why he didnt use his generator.

It sucks they kept on telling him what they did, But they are gonna say whatever to keep you quiet. Think of how many calls they were getting.

Its a hard thing to go thru... Today when I got home I saw my tank and it was all cloudy, First thing that came to mind was oh crap the heat. Luckily it was my power head fell and started blowing sand everywhere. You ever seen a fat man run... I BOLTED. Took the lights off and looked and saw what happened. But man The terror I went thru.

Sorry if you think im kicking him down, I meant no harm.

Didn't mean to single you out, Edwin;)

Many assumed Hugo didn't have a generator, which he did. It was a judgement call on his part to trust the electrical company. Unfortunately, it was the wrong call. Hugo is a nice guy. Guess it just seemed to me like people were busting his chops, after such a disaster.
