Big thanks to dreaminmel

Phil just as an fyi whenever I have filled a tank Ialways have used normal tap water not ro unless I already have some made up. and have never had any ill effects at all.

I used to always fill with tap as well Jeff. Never saw any reason not to. The last few times I've had to reset/refill, however, I've used strictly RO and found an amazing difference in the amount of algae during cycles. With tap I used to get gobs of diatoms, tons of green fuzz and then eventually the hair algae. With using RO water from get go I get just a dusting of diatoms, a faint green fuzz stage and still no hair algae as of yet.

yeah but consider one thing how much waste water is produced when you make 200 plus gallons of ro water enough to fill a hot tub haha I just always use tap water and schedule a few waterchages close together

there ya go everyone is wondering what to do with their waste water although I dont know if you want a hot tub full of waste water

My houseplants actually love the waste water. I think the extra shot of minerals is like a vitamin shot for them.

In all seriousness though, if I were to fill with tap and then do a few water changes soon after or do more than usual after a bad algae outbreak... the waste water from filling it with RO the first time around would either end up being comparable or much less over time. Plus, when doing extra water changes to bring phosphates, silica, etc under control you end up using salt in the process as well. Nothing wrong with that at all. Just my preference to start it out as clean as possible. I know many, many people just fill right up with tap so it's not a taboo thing at all. :)

See unless its growing under water I dont grow them I dont have a green thumb maybe I shouldn't say that considering what I do for a living. Amazing how I can help people have great gardens but dont have one at home. we are on septic out here so I hate to waste water

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....had to get caught up on that one! Jeff...i'm another tap water gal over here. Knocking on wood...but i've never had any issues. And with the proper inhabitants, never an algae problem. And since we pay for our water?

Jeff, so you think it will be okay if i use tap water to start and maybe after the cycle do like a 25 gallon water changed every week for like a month? Or should i do the water changes ASAP

I have done this on every tank I have had its just the way I do it not saying it is the right way just the way i do it then I do a water change in about a week then if there is an algar outbreak I do another one in two weeks nothing big

60 gallons or so maybe more again its just me everyone is different. Its also really going to depend on the liverock. if it looks good do less if it looks terrible do more
