I have too many tanks as it is, but am thinking of a fish only with live rock. Thinking of a 75 gallon with at least 75-90 pounds of live rock, and a variety of fish. Question is, can i use simple HOB filters or cannister filters instead of creating a sump? Also, what fish stocking suggestions for a tank of this size? I would love to get a flame angel,a coral beauty angel, maybe a foxface lo, or a powder blue tang... i also like the royal gramma basslet or possibly a scott's fairy wrasse. Thanks for the advise. Bunker:)

You can definitely use just a HOB or canister filter with a FOWLR tank, just make sure to keep up with your water changes. However, having a sump makes things a lot easier IMO. The powder blue tang is a bit of a stretch in a 75. i think you could have all the fishes you mentioned except the PBT as long as you have only one of each fish.

You can definately go without a sump. However they do help. If price is the problem with a sump by the way....think about this.... any petstore will sell a crappo sump for 200-300 dollars...I DIY built mine by ebaying a 30 dollar overflow box, buying a 10 dollar, 10 gallon aquarium...and spending about 5 bucks in pvc piping....I would go with cannister over hang on back though...because it's better filtration...it creates flow (which you need)...is quieter...and won't cause salt creep on your light or hood.

A 75 is a good size but I would be cautious about the flame angel and the coral beauty. Your tank may be large enough to keep them from fighting, but having 2 angels in a tank can be a disaster unless the tank is really large. Also, powder blue tangs get really big--I'm not sure I would try that but ask the Tang Police, they can give you a better answer.

Has anyone here had a regeal angel red sea fish? Saw those online and wow, are they awesome! how about a queen trigger or a lime green wrasse? Bunker

what size cannister should i go for, and what do you recommened
for the inside fillings of the cannister fileters? I see they range in price from $100 for a Rena or fluval, or should i go for the $400 eheim? Bunker

actually i have a flame angel, coral beauty AND a juvenile french angel in my 55 (was a birthday gift from a friend, but i will find it a new home in a few months) for around 7 months now and they share the tank perfectly. i have heard many other people say the same thing about flames and coral beauties, but really comes down to the individual fish. imo, give it a shot
