hi

i am planning a new sump for my new setup...

i would rather not give up the space for a refugium if i dont have to..

if i plan on using bio pellets

do people use refugiums with them or no refugium?

i assume none but not sure..

whats the thoughts??

If using biopellets then you wouldn't need a refugium unless you wanted to create a cryptic zone as many people do.

My sump was designed with ZEOvit in mind, I used the space for a large skimmer instead.
I use biopellets now and I wouldn't redesign the sump in anyway.

I still use a fug for my tank even though I am using the pellets. The fug will still help in removing phosphate that the pellets don't eat up.

A fuge could be used in conjunction with the pellets whereas in other situations like with carbon dosing its not practical because the carbon source would kill the macro algaes. In other words, it wouldn't hurt to have a fuge as well, but you could easily do without. There have always been other methods to using a refugium. The new biopellets are just making it even easier.

You could have a fuge with rock rubble and/or sand which would be a breeding area for pods. Like was said above, macro algae would die.
