Yes, the raw shrimp will work. I like using ammonia because I can keep track of how much I add and how much the bacteria is able to transform into nitrite. I would just make sure you have atleast 1 ppm of ammonia in there at all times.
If there's live rock in the tank, there's no need to dump any kind of shrimp into the tank. If not, I'd add a small chunk (maybe a 1/8" cube) each day for a few days. Fish food would be fine as well.
