Bio-Wheel

i have had a bio-wheel but have not used it in a long time....is it good to put back in and re-use? it doesn't have any gunk on it from the previous use and i can't imagine it would be bad to use but figured id ask on here just in case lol.

I am sure it would be fine to put back in. It would just go through that initial break-in cycle that establishes the bacteria on them like it did when you originally used it.

I would not recommend putting it back in however.... Take my opinion lightly, as I am still learning myself, but IME it has lead to a nitrate problem. Since removing my bio-wheels, my nitrates have since dropped all the way to 0 and remained there.

Hope that helps

Come on there has to be one more "nitrate factory" chime in, when that had nothing to do with the question.

Go for it, I have re-used wheels many times.

Pretty irresponsible answer for a newbie HBtank especially when YOU yourself don't even use one "Emperor 400 w/ no wheels (soon to be replaced by powerheads and sump with SCWD return) 18g eclipse SA FW tank"

Bio-wheels have no business being in the saltwater hobby.
Go ahead use it but be prepared for the consequences. Sheesh... Most people will not learn unless through the hard way anyway :)

No I just took the time to notice that he/she does not have a SW tank. ;)

Anyways, I have seen many nice FO tanks with just a 400 and some powerheads.

Well ... Last time I checked this was a saltwater/reef site and it only stand to reason that only salt related topics applied.

He also stated that he had "none in Saltwater" as far as experience and that his interests included "Saltwater and Freshwater Aquariums" which tells me that he's either beginning the jump into SW or is thinking about it and collecting more information before doing so.

WOW didn't mean to start an argument :)
yes im a saltwater newbie and i have a ton of biowheels laying around from my freshwater. was basically wondering if i should throw them away or if i could reuse them either in freshwater or saltwater.... and yes im am researching saltwater to see what i need or want for my setup.... :)
hope that helps... and im gathering bio-wheels are not the optimum method for filtering?? :)

and that they could work just not recommended?

thanks guys and i think you two should hug and make up :) hehehe J/K :)

The reason you generally dont want bio-wheels in a reef tank is that they are too efficent for de-nitrification and do nothing for nitrification. They host aerobic bacteria that break ammonia to nitrite then nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is ok in freshwater and even for saltwater fish to an extent. Nitrate is not good for coral. Generally, for reef tanks you want a lot of decent live rock and a good skimmer. The skimmer removes organics before they have a chance to break down. The live rock does what the bio wheels do, but also go one step further. The aerobic bacteria colonize the surface of the rock and perform de-nitrification. Anaerobic bacteria live under the surface of the rock and break nitrates down to nitrogen, which then leaves the system through gas exchange on the surface of the water. Deep sand beds can also do both, but they are more finicky. Basically, with a bio wheel, you dont get any nitrification, and the end result is a ton of nitrates, thus "nitrate factory"

Sorry for the long post. Hope I helped.

Oh yeah, i forgot to add that it is totally fine to re-use bio wheels if you want. They just have to re-colonize with bacteria like a new one would. Use em just like if you were using a new one.
