bioballs

I have read several negative comments about bioballs. what is wrong with using them? I have them in the sump of one of my tanks.:rolleye1:

they could make nitrate if not maintened

They are nitrate traps if they are exposed to the air if they are not exposed to the air they will act as a place to to grow your bio filter but most here prefer you build the bio filter in you display on live rock not in your sump
