BioPellets and UV Sterilizer

I thought I once read if you are running BioPellets that you should turn off your UV sterilizer as it will counteract the BioPellet process. I have been running my BP reactor for sometime with UV turned off. Is this truly the case? I have had great success with the BP's but I also would like to run the UV for peace of mind. What is everyone's thoughts on this? Thanks

Scott

My opinion, a UV sterilizer doesn't do a whole lot, regardless of whether or not you run bio pellets.

I would disagree a good uv is a must for me as a breed fish. As long as you keep your flow right and it's able to do its job it is good for prevention, and it also controls algae to a degree.

Don't worry about the bacteria for biopellets, they live in a contained system.

It's not gonna cure ich or even stop it but it can minimise bacterial infections and help control outbreaks of ich, etc. Solid QT and treatment of all fish once one gets stick is still a must

Vast majority of algae, bacteria and parasites don't live in the water column, where they can be pumped through a UV sterilizer. In a nutshell, that's why I feel that they don't do a lot, good or bad.
However, to each his own, if you feel that it's doing something positive for your system, by all means, use it.

+1
that's how look at it.

only thing Ive noticed is the water being a little clearer. not a confirm fact, that could just be what my eyes are telling my brain :)

I know its an old post...but I read this from BRS website..."We recommend turning the UV sterilizer off until you have achieved results with the biopellets and then turning the UV sterilizer back on"...I personally own a top of the line UV and will do like they say...take that as you would like...personally me, I'd try it there route and see what happens, and if things arent working out maybe turn it off...

Please excuse my newbieness but I thought UV is usually run on the return and the effluent from biopellet reactor needs to go back to skimmer to become skimate. Aren't those 2 flows usually different or is this thread more about the startup and bacteria seeding of the reactor?
