Biopellets... who is using them?

Last week I picked up a bag of the Vertex BioPellets. For those of you who haven't heard of them, there is a very detailed thread in the Chemistry forum about how they work and different opinions/experiences. In short, they are used as a method of solid carbon dosing and it is claimed that using them will lower both Nitrates and Phosphates.

I know of a few people locally that dose other forms of Carbon, but I'm curious to know if anyone has tried the pellets yet. In an effort to eliminate GFO usage and keep NO3/PO4 down, I figured I would give them a try. Thoughts?

John are these the pelletized reactor media? I just read an advertisment in Coral Magazine about them, they sound like a interesting idea.

John . Good luck with them.
As we discussed, after 18 good months , I'm sticking with vodka and vinegar for now. At least I know the end product is acetate which is beleived to be somewhat useful to corals. I don't know what effect long term use of the pellets and the ploymers may have. Although the manufacturer's claim the carbon source is not miscible( does not diffuse through the water) like directly dosed carbon sources , I'm skeptical of the claim that the organic carbon source in the pellets is wholly consumed on the surface of the pellet and won't move into the water column.
There are many posts on the various threads citing the appearance of stringy white material and bacterial blooms which mirror problems which sometimes occur with overdosing of other carbon sources that are dosed directly into the water( vodka, vinegar, absorbic acid, glucose, etc.). if the organic carbon source stayed on the on the pellets throughout the bacterial activity, then what's feeding bacterial blooms in the tank?

Several things I would do if I were starting carbon dosing ie solid via pellets or otherwise:

Get your nitrates down under 10ppm via other methods
( reduced feeding, gac, heavy skimming water changes ,denitrators, etc) before starting. Carbon sources seem to work better at reducing initial lower initial level and then holding them down. Blooms and difficulties show up in reports whne the process is initiated with lots of pellets in high NO3 tanks. IME the nitrates wouldn't move off the 50ppm mark temptin me to dose more. I didn't. Once I knocked them down with a sulfur denitrator moderate carbon dosing has held them near zero.
Second ,I'd introduce the pellets over a period of time ,starting with a small amount and working up solwly while observing for any adverse reactions.
Third, test for PO4 and NO3 frequently to monitor progress and to determine how much product to use.
Fourth , make sure your organic carbon export system is up to snuff.Heavy skimming , gac, etc.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I've had the vertex brand going for several weeks now. running in a TLF phosban with MJ1200. added 60 ml a week. up to around 240 ml right now. I have not experienced any bacterial blooms. my skimmer did go nuts about 3 weeks in. my nitrates have gone from about 25 to 10. phos is still undetectable on the garbage test kit I own. hard to believe though with some of the algae I'm experiencing. will be interesting as I'm switching to the 90 gallon soon (I hope).

hey John keep me updated on how those are working for you..Running gfo and carbon my Nitrates are almost 15.. I'm going to try dosing vodka soon to get these trates under control..

stop feeding frozen food some much.

I put frozen food (Mysis & Rods) in my tank about 4 times a month when I have time. Most months I'll go with none at all, but then my acans start looking crappy after 3 months. I use about 8 small cubes worth to feed my Acans, Chalices & Zoas.

I feed all my fish with a mixture of small Pellets (Ocean Nutrition Formula 1 & 2 & cyclopeeze pellets) 1 to 3 times a day with Eheim auto feeders. Its been working out great for years and my fish are nice and FAT. My nitrates are always under 4.

haha thats for sure Brent, your tangs are real lunkers :fish1: I'm going to try to ween my fish to pellets and get a couple auto feeders..

I feed one cube a day. tried to feed the small spectrum pellets but my bangai, firefish and orange spotted goby won't go to the surface for them.

W/ the spectrum pellets I take a pinch of them, stick my fingers under the water line and then release. That way they don't float around on the surface and end up going down the overflow.

Update...

I got some Vertex Pro-Bio Pellets and ran them for one week in each of my tanks

1 is with 120g 30g 40g sump system in a BRS 2 stage reactor Pellets 1st,Carbon in the 2nd..The first 6 days nothing was to report, really no change in water params..

The 7th day ..today I went to check the sump (daily husbandry stuff) I checked the outflow of the reactor,no water..Hmm looked at the reactor and seen my carbon section fully stuffed with this primordial goo crap.. I was like wohh wth is this crap..scared the crap out of me so I got rid of those pellets as fast as I could..

Checked the 60g same setup but I have phosban 150's on them..Sam thing..Goo was clogging up everything..The amount of that stuff was alarming to me..I will look around to find if anyone else is going through the same..

The goo is likely bacterial mulm. It's common with carbon dosing at least at first.

Todd... check out this thread, lots of good info/tips regarding the Vertex Pellets.

If you want to run the pellets in your reactor, you'll need to remove the sponges and put some mesh in there so it doesn't clump. Most people use Needle point mesh from a craft store and cut it to size, works great and will cost less than $1. Here's a picture someone posted to give you an idea. Don't give up on the Pellets just yet! :)
