Biospira tank cycle help!!!

If you do a search on Bio-Spira here on RC, you will find an old thread that I did about bio-spira, and the effect while cycling a tank. You might find it interesting. I tried searching for it, but the search button wasn't working.

This one?

food for thought....

if Bio-Spira did what it claims....then it would be bought by EVERYONE and used all the time.

however thats not the case. Bio-Spira helps the natural nitrogen cycle speed along a little faster. You are basically jump starting the bacteria load so they can consume ammonia and nitrites faster.

BUT.....Bio-Spira is not a magical potion that you can toss in your tank and expect to have a fully loaded, thriving reef within the week.

even if it did cycle your tank over night. tank params change rather quickly. adding LR with throw things off balance and your tank needs to re-adjust before adding more items. then you add a few fish and your tanks needs to re-adjust once again. By adding LOTS of stuff at once can make your tank go so far off course its nearly impossible to recover without many casualties. So you need to slowly create a reef tank. you will be better off in the long run with a much healthier tank

Bio-Spira --- Funny how the initials are BS!! Coincidence?

funny
but i really wanna see this thread fareforce is talking about before i can agree with that. ( still funny tho)

I checked out the links that farefoce provided and one of the audio files seemed to suggest that their bio-wheel lead to a significant increase in the number of aquariums kept in America (about 2-3%, from memory).

I find it very hard to believe and I strongly doubt most of the marketing that is linked to in this thread. DNA sequencing and the likes. What a load of nonsense (I trust the word nonsense isn't too strong for anybody).

Everybody has a mind of their own, but I doubt you will get any real worth from the product promoted (or otherwise) in this thread.

All the best with it.

Just thought I would let everyone know that the tank has finished it's cycle. Though I did remove the fish, I added ammonia to the tank to keep the ammonia level at 1-2 ppm until the Nitrites fell. It took just about two weeks for the cycle to complete with Bio-Spira. Though removing the fish and adding Amquel may or may not have been a factor in the outcome of the cycle. I now have a couple damsels in the tank to see how things go. Oh...I also added a Coralife 33000 super skimmer about a week ago. Thanks again for all the great help.

Yup....I might have knocked a week or two off the cycle because I didn't have live rock to help it cycle faster, only base rock. All in all it was a WASTE of 25 bucks. You live you learn!!! I will be getting a larger tank later this summer, so it will be all live rock and a fishless and bio-spiraless cycle. The current 35 gallon may become a QT tank (undecided).

start up a tank thread with lotsa picts. ^^ then send me the link ( once you start the bigger tank )

I used biospira, it took two applications. I'd say maybe the bag you got of the stuff had been left a little too warm during storage? If you are worried, get another bag. After two days check and if necessary treat again. Don't use amqeul, it just slows everything down and you are suppoed to be letting the biospira do the trick for you.

Good luck, Kevin

the Biospira will work, I have uses the stuff on 5 tanks and always takes a week or so to get perfect readings. All tanks were freshwater for cichlids but no fish ever died and the tanks were over populated breeders about 50fry on a 30g! Levels will jump but the biospira makes the toxins less harmfull to the fish

All natural is the way to go! Period. We all find that out in the end. I'm glad things worked out for you and hope everything is running smoothly now. Keep us updated and don't forget the pictures. Everyone will love them.

Be happy!

Just wanted to say that everything is going great. I got my full load of fish in, and all levels are looking good. I inserted a pic of my first fish only tank with base rock, Crushed coral mixed with regular gravel, and fake plants. I also added a powerhead for some flow and a Coralife protein skimmer. Its a start......lol. If you notice any problems with this setup, please let me know.
