Birds nest dead around base

Is my birds nest ok? Under the coral and around the base there is no tissue. The top is fine. The coral has been growing fast. I first noticed this around a month ago. Wondering if it is normal for the bottoms of corals not exposed to light to be like this.

I have a bunch of big SPS corals and a way I have found to reduce the dead areas around the base is with masive waterflow.

I agree that you need to increase the water flow in the area of this coral. The areas in the middle of the coral that are bleaching are basically suffocating. Also, be sure to monitor the receeding areas progress to make sure you do not have an issue with RTN.

it was acro eating flatworms ?? just a thought but not a good one

Thanks for all of the input! I will try and increase flow to the coral. I have not seen any flatworms on the coral.

Water flow will help stop base necrosis if all other parameters are good. Oscillating pumps help the most to keep water from becoming stagnant.

I think I figured out what happened. I have a MP10 that was on short pulse which provided, good flow around the tank. My driver has been acting up and it has not been working correctly. This forced me to try different modes, which I think decreased the flow to the coral. I messed with the pump today and got the short pulse mode to work again, further I ordered the ecosmart driver upgrade to bad it is on backorder! Anyway I am hoping that the flow in the short pulse mode will stop the necrosis, and my new driver comes before my current driver dies.
