Birdsnest Base

Hey everyone - So I have a Ponape birdsnest frag, it is starting to grow like crazy. I am concerned though, because about a 1/4 inch at the base which is attached to the plug is dead. I have never had a birdsnest before so I am not sure if it will encrust back down or not as i have had happen with other SPS. Will I run into any issues keeping the frag this way? Does it matter that the base is dead skeleton? Thanks!

IMO I would cut the frag and reglue it.

I have a Milka Stylo that did this and it didnt grow at all. So I cut it reglued and in 2 weeks it has encrusted the entire frag.

Just be careful typically my personal rule is not to frag a coral unless it's happy and growing.. or to save some pieces.

From my understanding it varies with species and even with different individuals within the species. I have a green birdsnest, S. guttatus, and it has showed nice growth over the past couple months and it has not encrusted at all.

I have 3 different kinds is BN and none have encrusted. Around 1/4" of base is dead, but all are growing very fast.mhope this helps.
