Birmingham Trip

I know I've seen it asked but I'm still confused soo. I'm going to be spending the weekend in Birmingham while my wife is in school during the daytime. When is Atlantis open now? and could I get the address.

Also is Aquarium Imports still in business in Hoover?

Are there any other stores in the Birmingham area? It's just amazing that a city that size doesn't have more places to choose from :(.

Thanks guys/gals!

Unless a new store has opened up, the only 'Atlantis' anything I'm aware of is Atlantis Aquariums here in Montgomery. In the immediate B'ham area, I think there's only Aquarium Imports on Hwy 31 in Hoover and (maybe) Aquarium Designs somewhere on 31 in Shelby County. There's a store in Oxford and a good one in Cullman.
I'm sure someone from Birmingham can give you more/better details.

Aquairum Design is only open on the weekends. We are in Cullman,it takes me about 40 minutes to get to Hoover from here.Give us a call if you want to come up.Lots of new frags and such.

Jason are you saying AD is in Cullman? I'm confused sorry. I thought there were 2 decent stores in the B'ham area. We are going to be right at UAB for Sat and Sun. That's why was looking in the area.

wpecoul, thanks, I'm going to have to make a road trip to Gomery, soon, is AI open on Sat? and how hard is it to find.

I went to the one in Oxford 2 weeks ago. Since I am new, I don't have any other store to compare too. IMO I thought it was a very small place, not alot to choose from and a little expensive, I could be wrong. I bought 2 peppermint shrimp $8.00 each, 10 little bitty hermit crabs .50 each (on sale), 4 snails .50 (on sale), 1 sally lightfoot crab $4.00 (that died 2 days later), 1 ruby crab $16.00 & 1 emerald crab $8.00 and it was over $60.00. Like I said, I havent bought that much so I don't really know how much is reasonable. They were very nice. I hope I can visit the two in B'ham soon.

From North to South from Hoover

Aquarium Imports is on Highway 31 in Hoover between I65 and I459 behind Outback(?) and next to a Mexican Rest.

Aquarium Designs is on Highway 31 in Pelham across from the Post Office up on the east side in a strip center. Just north of Olde Town Pottery.

You might also check Tropical Pet Cove http://tropicalpetcove.com/ in Alabaster on Highway 119 just past Publix on the left. The first weekend of the month usedto be buy 3 get one free. Haven't been in a while to know Darryl still does it or what livestock they have.

Jason, Do ya'll have a storefront, hours, website, directions?

Thank-you! and I didn't realize Jason had store, now I understand. That's exactly what I'm looking for. If I dont make it to Jason's this trip I will on the next one for sure!

Jason is well worth the trip. I have some zoa and sps frags in Pell City but still a little drive from B`ham. The old/new aq. designs is not bad. more coral than imports I beleive although there has been some talk that imports has stepped up their coral offering.

This weekend will probably just be window shopping. No way to bring frags home with the schedule, unless was late Sunday. I'll have to get back with you Rugdog, you actually aren't that far from my home, I live in Ranburne :). Thanks everyone for the help!

Is suks here....

There are 17 stores withing 60miles of Atlanta, and really only 1 somewhat decent store in B'Ham...

Makes me think about opening my own joint up

I wish you hadn't mentioned that saltyjp, now I want to make a road trip just to see them all. :)

There may be a lot more stores in Atlanta, but I think it might be a "grass is always greener" deal, because I don't hear Atlanta-area folks speaking all that highly of the stores around there, either. Ever since Cap Bay closed, the ones I've visited have all been pricey.

a little pricey with a selection beats nothing all day long. I dont mind paying for what I want when I can see what I am getting. I have been to several Atlanta stores recently and it is a pleasure to see nice things and purchase then take home (no shipping) one store in particular I have visited 3 times in the last few weeks and have bought nice fish from them 2 times that I would have never seen around here. One of the nicer stores I have ever seen as well.

I haven't been able to find a new ATL store sine Cap.Bay and Reef Store closed. Any suggestions? I'm in ATL (mainly West side) every 2 weeks or so.

I do stop at Valley every trip but selection is spotty at best, I did meet the new owner this week. Hopefully, their stock level will improve...

there are several that are ok but for nice clean displays and plenty of stock (corals and fish) creation reef in Woodstock is NICE.

Check out the McWane Center

Check out the McWane Center

If you're going to be in B'ham, consider checking out the McWane Center. The bottom floor has a handful of tanks. Of course, it's nothing compared to true public aquariums, but one tank does have a HUGE green moray. Seeing this made my day! The other floors have some interesting non-related stuff. If you're looking for some entertainment while your other half is at UAB, you might enjoy this place.
