Bizzaro wavemaker? would this work?

I have two mag 12's as returns to my display. It's too much external flow, creating a constant waterfall sound effect at the overflows. I've considered several solutions:

Decrease to two mag 9's
Instert ball valves and dial down the flow.
Control with timers so both are only on while I'm sleeping.

But.... What if I placed them on a wave controller strip? It could cycle like this:

Cycle begins:
At 0 seconds: First Mag starts (feeds left side of tank)
At 30 seconds Second Mag starts (feeds right side of tank)
At 60 seconds First Mag stops
At 90 seconds Second Mag stops
At 120 Cycle restarts

Would this produce a wave effect? Would there be any concerns with doing this?

You are probably going to fry the pumps with a wavemaker.

I've had experience with Mag 9.5 and 12's being touchy on restarting after power's cut. One of those SCWD's might be an option, they tend to choke output somewhat and give you that switching flow....

Yah, bad idea that. You'll toast those mags in no time! And you won't get a "wave" like a wavebox. You would just get more random flow pattern. For a week until the pumps said "screw this!"

Mags dont last as long when they are cycled on and off constantly. They arent designed to be on a wavemaker.
