Thats the basic template I used to build mine. I think the lumber and screws cost about $19 at homedepot. It could be put together in an afternoon. You can skin it in whatever material you choose and paint it all black. Just a cheap DIY option if you end up going that route
Honestly, that's probably my best route, I'm just nervous about skinning it to be honest. lol, i'm not exactly good with it. However, it does appear to be my best bet and it might end up being a weekend project soon.
As you can tell I would like to replace the white shelving I have.
I'd also want to put a small frag tank on it. I will use a marble or granite top to the stand.
When I skinned mine I just got home depot to cut all the pieces for me. I just made sure to measure them myself before I left to make sure they were cut right. Then I used wood screws to put it on. It makes the stand super rigid. To hide the screws I bought some corner molding which is pretty cheap and use liquid nails to put it on the corners of the stand.
If you went with some "sandply" which is more expensive but pretty smooth compared to regular pine plywood you could sand it down further and get a pretty smooth surface to paint on. I am by no means a master carpenter.... its just what I think would work. Im sure there are primers and paints that will give you a very smooth surface to paint over. Hopefully someone with more woodworking knowledge than me will chime in on this.
If you are ever in the area you are more than welcome to come check out my stand.
