Black Bandit ANgelfish

I dont have one, desperate to acquire one but I have heard live brine is a good food to get it to start eating and try clam on a half shell

I have one. Nad had one in past also. Eating was no issue. On both. Clams from fish store , live brine , or live black worms.

I tried the clam, mix food, cyclops, mysis, live brine and black worms, seaweed, ocean flakes, and pellets...

doesn't seem to be interested in eating

Mine took about 1-2 weeks to eat. Went on several hunger strikes after that. Now it will eat just about anything including pellets & flake. I've had it since May.

so is it normal for it to do that? I know regals are similar in eating habit, but ya.

It ate some flakes the first day, but spat it back out afterwards.

I have had many Bandits over the years, none of which gave me any significant issues eating after a couple of days of settling in. My fish never went weeks before it ate. I got my Bandits direct from diver Matthew Ross, and he made sure to properly decompress them. With my most current specimen, I cheated a bit, and let Kevin Kohen do the heavy lifting :)

With the past Bandits, I offered clams and muscles on the half shell, PE Mysis and the finicky eater blend of NLS pellets.

Be patient, but be very diligent and check the fish for decompression issues and/or infection if the fish you have has been needled during the decompression process.

Thanks :)

I was staring at the bandit a few mins ago and noticed it had some kind of spots on its fin that was damaged. I am not sure what they are. Its more like white pimples.

It doesn't have ick as I have MANY experience battling that heh.

I know I am going to get dinged for this, but I haven't treated it yet as I wanted to at least start trying to eat before I do any treatment.

Definitely let it get settled before you go the medication route. Prazi will shut down the feeding response. Once you see it consistently nibbling on any of the food you are offering, then you can chance a medication regime. If you start to notice bloat or discoloration/bruising near stomach or anal area, the fish may have an infection of the swim bladder. I have also dealt with bacterial infections near the top of the fish's head (not on any of the Bandits sent from Matt). I treated with Maracyn 2 and it went away in 2-3weeks. BTW, how big is the Bandit you have, and how long have you had it? IME, Bandits are easier to get to eat than Regals.

The seller told me it was 3 1/2 but....from eyeballing it, it looks close to 4-5 inches which ticked me off.
I had the fish for almost a week now.

Not trying to be nosey, but how much did you pay for her? I found out the larger ones are less expensive than the smaller ones.

The larger ones don't adjust to captive life as well as the small ones, that's why most people prefer to get the smaller size and that affects the price

I would never take a Bandit over 4.5", they definitely have a difficult time adjusting to captive fed meals like mysis, brine, etc. Ideal range is 2-3" if you don't want the hassle of feeding a tiny juvenile every 2 hours. When I first started keeping Bandits, Rob Lower (RIP) would send me fish that were 4.5-5" and would take days to eat anything. He sent me three at that size and only 1 survived longterm. Matt sent me a 2.5 and a 3" Bandits that were pristine and ate right out of the bag. Back in 2009, I paid $900 for the pair!!!

Here are some current prices on Bandits based on size ( or at least what I have been quoted over the last 6 months):

Juvi- $1200-$1400 each
2"-3" $900-$1000
3"-4"- $800-$900
4"-5"+ -$600-$800

Does it pick ? if so take a small rock, and a algae based formula push it into the rock let him pick more natural most angel have to learn to eat food that floats most pick

It stares at a rock all day, but doesn't pick at it. I am not sure what I can smear in between the rocks.

See, I knew the rule for the bandit and thats what I told the person to get me that size. They heavily emphasis it was 3.5...but from tip of the beak to end of the tail, it looks more like 5....so i am pretty ****ed about it.
