Thinking of getting one of these beautiful fish. Trying to make up my mind with regards to this fish or the standard royal gramma which is also very nice. Any thoughts would be appreciated especially those keeping the black cap? Thanks

This is a fish that I used to keep and miss very much since he died. Beautiful fish with lots of personality.

They both behave about the same. The black cap may be a little more cryptic since they live in deeper depths along ledges around 60 feet. Large groups of black caps are found pretty much directly below groups of royal grammas. This makes acclimation to captive lighting pretty important. Also make sure your fish is eating and swimming well before you buy. Due to the depth they are collected, BC's can have swim bladder issues.

Thank-you. Was going to order one online. Not a good idea I guess. From one end of Canada to the other. Can't observe fish before purchase.

I keep a royal gramma and black cap in the same 120gal.tank. Black cap is more secretive and spends most of time in the bottom part of tank between rock.It comes out mostly when my main lights turn off.Royal gramma is more visible and mostly swims in upper part.

If you are buying from a quality source you shouldn't be worried.

If it is JL you are thinking of purchasing from, GO FOR IT!! Some of the best quality livestock I have received within Canada, even with coast to coast shipping in the winter. Not even a fin split on a single specimen.
