Black Clown...want another

I have a Black Clown from Australia that is currently in my 225 tank. I have had him for about about a year. He started out in my 125 but is now in the above tank. He has been the only clown in either tank.

He has been in the 225 since June and is currently hosting my Ducans (Something he has never done before).

My LFS has a nice B\W Clown that is about the same size as the one that I have. What are the odds that I can put this new clown in the tank and it survive?

My current clown is about 1.5"

if they are close in size, they should be fine, just release the clown on the opposite side of the tank from where the other one is. do it in the dark, after the lights go out, it should be as dark as possible... i have two black clowns in my 60 gallon (not a mated pair) and two ocellaris in the same tank (also not a mated pair) and VERY RARELY see any aggression... maybe once a month and it only lasts for about 5 seconds.. they have shared their 60 gallon reef home for about a year and a half now...

If your clown has been alone all this time there is a chance it's a female, and if the LFS has one the same size it could be female too, and you don't want two females. I think your best bet is finding one a lot smaller than the one you have now. Plus if they're the same size there probably will be more fighting to see who's the more dominate. Just my two cents. I'm no expert though.

I woul agree with Dotz. I tried adding a clown of the same size to another and they were fine for about 5 minutes then began to fight so I had to remove one. Since your fish has been alone for a while it is most likely female. You might have a better chance with the smallest clown you can find so that it can turn into the male of the couple.

Live Aquaria sells CB black ocellaris. CB fish are much healthier and the only way to go, especially with a common, widely available species like ocellaris, IMO.

I agree. The odds are great that your existing clown is a female, and if you add another one that is the same size I wouldn't be surprised if one ended up dead. Should get one that is smaller.

Well as luck would have it, there were two clownfish at the LFS. One was larger than the other. Someone bought that one last week and the smaller one is left. Changes are better that this is a male and not a female.

Hey, that's some good luck for you then. Maybe they'll pair up and you woon't have to worry about it. How big is your Duncan colony? I'd really like a clown to host mine once it gets big enough.

Yeah, I guess it was meant to be. :)

Well the power just went out in the neighborhood so I can't post pictures yet of my duncans..

I will once everything is back up. Hopefully it will not be too long. :(
