Black / Darwin OC Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris "Darwin") Breeding Log!

cool that gives me hope i have heard from a few ppl from other boards that for some reason b/w WC oc's are a pita but then again i cant take that for anything other than heresay as not all fish are the same.

i just hope they mature into healthy pair bonded spawning fish.

other than that good luck to all and to all a good night

Here in my part of the world the general impression is too that BWC are more difficult to bread. Specially to get them started to bread the first time. Once a pair is bonded and the spawning frequency is establish it seem to be same as OC.

Maybe it's just nobody dares to dive/swim around the domain waters of hungry salties anymore. Their apparent gusto for collectors and unwary tourists has been in the news.

metalManiac, can we have those links ? Thanks

sure

1st two links are from government sites, third is from a tafe institution and last is from a hobbyist in OZ.

also, here is a reference which talks about B&W occys.

12-15-06 - I figured it was time to update you all on the Black Ocellaris pair again...their pair bond is STRONG at this point, and they are CONSTANTLY FAT. The male's face has darkened a bit since introducing them to the tank. If it wasn't for the fact that they simply aren't nearly the size of my young breeing Percs, I'd say they could spawn at any time, but the reality is that it's probably a while off yet. The female still occasionally "Cleans" a site on the back wall...it appears she's removed a rather sizeable patch of coraline algae in the process of her cleaning...

Both fish, but especially the female of this Black OC pair, are on the receiving end of elevated aggression from the Allardi Female. They're not helping their cause by TRYING to host in the cup coral that feeds all the mandarins and seahoreses in the tank. I'm currently back to thinking that the 6 gallon cube will become their new home after the first of the year when the 3 remaining Onyx Percs from Batch I are sold...having a tank to themselves (only to share with a Neon Goby) may help kick these guys into high gear!

Matt

BTW, and this is strange, I just noticed that the female (larger fish) is nuzzling the abdomen of the smaller fish (vent area) alternating with headstanding quivering displays. Maybe these clowns have it backwards????? Thoughts?

Matt

Matt,
Maybe she is trying to tell him something.
This is probably going to be disputed somewhere on here but I think that it is the male who instigates the breeding.
I have noticed that my male's oviposter (or blokes equivalent) is extended before the females. Probably a sign that he is ready for her to spawn?

I would take a stab at the fact that she is waiting for him??
At least that is what happened in my tank from what I could tell.

Interested to hear any other opinions?

Cheers
Nathan

Matt, face it, you don't have room for the black ocys. Give them to me, I'll make a nice home for them, and let you have some of the babies later when you have more room!

Sound like a plan? Didn't think you would go for it, but you can't blame a girl for trying....

Would be nice to be a little closer to that side of the world. Here I have more than enough black and whites for everyone.

I guess they were a pita to get to spawn first time...... I was trying for 8 months which included my rapid intro to the hobby. We got the tank with clowns from my GFs old house. took me a little while to understand the in and outs.

Any new pics Matt?

im hoping to get mine spawning but like matt they are still a bit small from what i have heard size wise from others.

im not sure how the pair bond is as they both frequent the same anemone now and the female isnt chasing the male around. he still submits regularly and they are little pit bulls when it comes to the anemone and the rock its on.

they are now chasing the 2 large angels i have in the tank as well as the powderblue and the 2 bar gobies i want to attempt later on aswell.

i guess only time will tell but good luck to all.

Mat, I picked up a black and white stragler two days ago.His tail fin is a little frayed.Rods food [ring the bell] will take care of that.I dont have a mate for him.If you see a mate for him or need him for anything let me know.I have no idea where he came from.

Kerusso, I'll keep an eye out for good Black OC's locally and if something shows up, I'll let ya know.

12-29-06 - I should just call these "Kathy's Black OC's" since she REALLY REALLY wants them (I promise, if latz show up and these guys go on the chopping block, you'll be one of the first I call!). Everything is just doing fine...just really wanted to show some better pix including how the males snout is darkening.

Just continuing to pump 'em full of food...it seems most aggression has subsided for the time being between the Allardi and Black OC's, but in the long run I think one of the two pairs will be getting it's own tank.

No sooner do I write that the aggression has subsided than the female allardi is al over both black OC's!!!

Oh well! There isn't any serious damage of any kind occuring...in fact no damage at all..it's mostly bluff and bluster at this point.

Matt

1-9-07 - I've awoke to a potentially major setback to this pair...the male has vanished. The'yre in a NANOCUBE with the hood on, so there's virtually no way for them to jump out. I checked all 3 back chambers of the filtration...didn't rip them apart yet but if he's anywhere, that's my first guess.

I haven't found any BODIES, but I wouldn't necessarily expect to with 2 harlequin serpent stars in the tank. I wouldn't suspect either of them to take down a healthy clownfish..heck they've never gotten to the mandarins or seahorses or rusty gobies.

I even removed and checked the Rhodactis mushrooms we have...nope..no clownfish encased in anemone!

I'm beyond stumped at the moment, and ready to rip apart the entire tank in an effort to find our missing clownfish because seriously, they don't just disappear!

Matt

Tore apart the back filtration...nothing. Removed 75% of the macro algae growth...nothing. How does a clownfish just VANISH in a "sealed" tank?!

Matt

Probably the worst part of this is that the Female is running around the tank, looking for her mate, and cleaning their selected nesting site like crazy, as well as trying with great vigor to host with the cup coral (they've been doing that for weeks actually, but nothing like the level she's doing today).

WHERE IS MY CLOWNFISH?!!!!

Matt

Fish just don't "disappear", especially in closed up systems. This is driving me beyond nuts. Where'd my little male Black OC go?!?!?!??!??!?!

Seriously considering tearing down the tank...heck, even if I only find a body, I at least KNOW what happened. I also know that the female allardi has gotten more bold, especially at night (chased her male into the filtration chambers a week or two ago), but for a fish to simply just VANISH? I'm further still miffed 'cause the male Red Scooter Blenny did the same thing (it didn't bug me quite as much because it's an open topped tank and we have a cat and dog running around here...jumpers landing on the floor may be considered lunch)

*** is going on. Of course, it further still has me going nuts 'cause Renee and I have been arguing over the locks on the back door...some mornings she tells me I've left it unlocked (from walking the dog) but I swear after the first time she told me I've double checked every night...and yet she's still telling me I'm leaving it unlocked?! Either someone is sleepwalking or something really wierd is going on here.

It's looking pretty grim for our male black OC...

Matt

Kathy, the worst part is that by Feb they were getting their own dedicated private tank. GRRRRRR!

Matt

Good luck matt if mine start soon and they have been doing the JIG alot towards eachother lately and they like the tile i put in the tank im hoping for some action soon i have you taken care of.

things are really progressing with my pair now that they are the only fish in the 30cube.

you didnt have any rock slides or anything did you? if your allardi is as evil as my clark was she may have burried the male

Well Keef, if I found a bloodied and beaten little male, I'd be happy with that (could nurse back to health) and would know who to blame. Unfortuantely, as the day goes on I'm having a real hard time focusing on work vs. tearing the tank apart. I honestly expect to find nothing at this point.
