Black Eggcrate Leeching

I have started the bleach process. I will keep the eggcrate in till monday. Drain it and replace with vinegar and water from monday to thursday.

don't think to hard about this. i used to make medical/lab grade plastic. we sprayed silcone like crazy on the mold(think pam/cake pan) to keep it from sticking. yes u most likely have some residue left over. a soak in vinger or some manual labor with a tooth brush will have back on track.

Looks like dinoflaggllates. Pain in the rear. Raising PH will help considerably - it is the reason I now have a soda lime reactor.

IMHO ditch the egg create and go to sand and a small cleanup crew. I moved my LPS and SPS frag tanks over to sand and it's been fantastic. talked another friend into it - just last night he was saying it was so much easier.

I have used both the black and white eggcrate. I've bleached it and given it vinegar baths. So, I don't think leaching is an issue. I agree with Gary ;it's the surface area. I've given up on it in favor of plexiglass with pvc legs. Very little aglae forms on it. It took a while to drill all the holes for frag plugs but it has been worth it.

Block- thanks for the info. I will scrub it on Thursday when it comes out of the vinegar bath and post some pictures.

Randy- I "borrowed" it from work. I had my staff buy it from the Home Depot 3 years ago.

If this fails I may need to learn how to drill holes into plexi.

Plexiglass is the same thing as acrylic; no need to buy online unless you prefer to. I would definitely recommend 1/4'' or thicker, though.

Where would I buy it in Buffalo? I just liked that there were a bunch of colors but I am guessing I would need clear so light could shine through.

Value hardware . I think Home Depot or Lowes would have it, I think its 1/4 inch. I layed the eggcrate on it as a guide and dotted it with a sharpie for evenly spaced holes., one for each 4 eggcrate squares, nmarked at th intersection of the cross, just enough to accomodate a plug surface Then clamped it and drilled/melted it with an ordinary spade bit. It was tedious as each 24 inch by 10inch piece has about 90 holes or so.

I bought a frag rack from BRS a while back and it seems to rapidly grow hair algae as well as the plugs that are being held in it. My tank also has algae problems to begin with so it's hard to say what's what, I don't remember exactly when the algae started compared to when I put in the rack but I feel like the algae started to get bad after putting in the rack.

Yes, I have a rapid uncontrollable algae growth. My algae growth has actually gotten worse over the last few days. I would pull it now if a suitable replacement was easy to find. I am heading to great lakes plastics to see what scrap acrylic they have.

do you need the rack to raise the height of frags? if not consider sand - I got rid of the egg crate, and don't see going back anytime soon

I pulled all of the eggcrate. 30% done. I built the small frag rack. I would be done but the only drill I have runs on battery power and it had a tough workout. I have about 50 more holes to drill.
