Black eggcrate

Anyone have half a sheet or a full sheet that their not using? Will trade for a new FragARack :) I'd want it ASAP since I'll be gone for a company meeting all next week. If thats the case I'll just order from Bulkreefsupply. Thanks

Starting to gather items for my new frag tank. Didnt want to just order a sheet of black eggcrate alone. Why I want a black eggcrate rather than white? It looks nicer :)

You could use krypton/krylon(?) paint to paint it black or purple or whatever color. I hear people use it to paint white eggcrate for use in their saltwater tanks.

I've also heard Krylon Fusion recommended over other brands. Though if I wanted black I'd probably just buy black eggcrate. Painting it an available color sounds like a hassle. Now if I wanted purple...

The black is supposed to inhibit the algae growth to some degree over the white. I heard a long time ago about the white leaching phosphates and actually encouraging algae growth. Thats why I have always used the black.

What, the black is of a different chemical composition which doesn't leach phosphates? I would expect it is the same chemically as the white only with a dye added.

Ha,ha,ha There is purpose in being a PACK RAT (garage wise). I was moving CRAP in my garage since its my area and what do you know. 3/4 of half a sheet of black eggcrate :) Guess its been sitting in the corner since I sold my other frag tank 5 years ago LOL That will keep me happy until I order a full sheet.

There you go!

I have to fight the pack rat thing. It was bad for my pack rat-ness that I recently used my 100g stand again that I had in the garage at my old place for almost 17 years.

Grant, maybe the black versus white eggcrate thing is like offwhite PVC and black ABS? Different materials. Though the white eggcrate doesn't feel like PVC.

I did some googling and found claims that black eggcrate is made from black styrene. Styrene is what the white eggcrate feels like too, and white styrene is available, so I'm guessing both white and black eggcrate are made from styrene. Thus probably same material, just dyed. And as you point out, perhaps the dye is the issue, if there is one?

BRS claims that with black eggcrate, the "All black color is less likely to attract plague algae growth". It doesn't talk about not causing / not fueling algae, just not attracting algae.

Good observation Luis! Algae seems reluctant to hang with the black eggcrate, yet is all over the white eggcrate.

Can't we all just get along? ;)

Maybe we should get Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the NAACP involved? :lol2:
