Black Ocellaris Breeding log

I think I have a pair or soon to be pair of onyx percula. The female terrorized the male for about a week but she has since settled into hosting a flower pot. The male hangs around outside or underneath. They eat together and the female no longer chases the male.

I put thes fish in 3 weeks ago into a 1 and 1/2 year old 2.5 gallon microreef tank. I feed three times a day. One of the feedings consists of BBS. I also feed Spirulina flakes and Freeze-Dried Cyclop-Eeze. I set a 17hour light cycle but the temp is only 81. I fear raising it too high on such a small tank. I saw some "Redox" products but they also seem too strong for a small tank.

I add iodine three times a week and I replace 15% of the water every three-four days and use this water for growing BBS. I have also started to grow microalgae. But I'm not sure my source was viable. You can see the bottle in the picture. It is supposed to be three different types. I plan to sieve plankton from the New York Harbor if I get eggs.

I bought another 2.5 gallon tank that you see behind the first. I plan to leave empty except for the seasoned filter from the first tank (I am currently seasoning a new sponge for the first tank) I wanted to move the heater and the filter to the back tank and develop some sort of water transfer from the first tank to the second and back. Any ideas?

Anyway, I know it aint much but I think it can work. Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks for the ID. Black O's is cool with me. Anyway, the female still fights with the smaller fish. I'm hoping its a male. I'm thinking about replacing the smaller fish if they won't get along.
 
The pair were nuzzling last night. The female was inside the flower pot. The male who sleeps on top of the flower pot was brave and came to the edge of the pot and they seemed to rub noses together or gently against the edge of the flower pot. I hope this means something!

Where is a good source for cyclop-eeze flakes?
 
I'd Have to disagree, I think that if they were Black Ocellaris they would be pitch black by now...They are simply too large to not have the jet black coloration.

they have too much orange, and even as juvies, they are chocolate brown, not orange...

it looks to me like a Ocellaris Pair that is very dark... but not nearly dark enough to be called Black Ocellaris...

Interesting... so just an anomaly color variation? Maybe a mix? I guess I'll call them VDOs!!

nice looking fish - i like the two-tone

as to water exchange between the two tanks...can't say they're the same 2.5g tanks i've seen, but i've yet to have one that could be drilled in the side...the glass is too thin. you could go thru the bottom most likely, but it doesn't look like that'd do you much good.

they're at the same level...raise one slightly, and put an overflow between them...intake on one tank, small pump in the other. 2.5 gallon tank you could probably get away with a lifter pump and still get decent tank turnover.

that small, you're likely looking at making the overflow contraption yourself...anything you could buy would take up more room than the filter/heater you're trying to get out of the tank.

I think I'll leave them as separate systems, and when the eggs are laid I will transfer the pot from one tank to the other and aerate. I think I'd have the most success this way. What do you think?
 
yah, jumping thru hoops to go from 2.5g to 5g when you could just go buy a 10g tank for 5 bucks doesn't make much sense.

i use 10g tanks for rotifer cultures, so advice on keeping your clowns happy and breeding in a 2.5g...i'd probably be the wrong person to give advice. space isn't much of a commodity w/ my setup, so 10g is as small as i go for pair tanks
 
I tried to propogate DTs phytoplankton (which is green) its a combo of three algaes.

I put a capfull in a pint of water with some fertilizer. It has only made the water slightly brown but there is an unexpected large amount of clumping brown algae growing in the bottom. Any ideas?
 
I think It may be the Phaeodactylum (a brown diaom) that has begun to grow and clump. I will vigorously shake the bottle and see if that helps.
 
I was starting to get a lot of cyano in my tank. at first I thought it was the high temps and overfeeding to stimulate pair to breed.

Turns out, I wasn't careful, I was topping off too much with saltwater and the salinity level crept up to very high levels. I got it back to normal and I hope the algae bloom will stop.
