as the tittle says my black onyx clown has had no interest in hosting my RBTA the anemone is 8" across so its more than big enough for the clown. not sure why he doesnt want to swim in it. will a black onyx clown even host an rbta?

tank stats:
24 gal cube
current sunpod 250W halide
tunze nanostream 6025
black onyx clown
rbta
tons of zoas and palys

thanks

How long has the clown been with the anemone? Just give him some time. It took my maroon pair several months before they jumped in, but I have had others who jumped right in. Has the clown ever hosted another anemone before this one?

ive had him for about 2months and his previous owner had a carpet anemone that he hosted but then the carpet died.

takes time...he may or may not ever host the RBTA but chances are if you'll be patient, he'll host.

also, if you want, you can print out color photos of black onyx hosting anemone's and tape them to the sides of the tank. the onyx will see the "other clowns" hosting and get the idea...others have said this works but I've never been able to successfully get this to happen as my b&w clowns are juvis and aren't ready to host one of the 10 rbta's in my show tank.

patience is key!

Just on a side note (and I'm saying this just for informing, not to come down on you), but "black" and "Onyx" are the same thing. You don't need to say "black onyx clownfish" as onyx already says that it is black.

so from the feed back:

i need to be patient
black onyx is not only redundant it bothers people
and anemones host clowns and not the other way around

im still learning guys but thanks for the heads up. i'll keep you posted.

Clowns will be clowns, it might jump in the nem at any second or it may not at all. Ive had clowns that jumped in at the sight of the nem & ive had clowns that didnt go in for several months and would compleatly ignore the nem.

+1 on the clowns being clowns, it can take time for them to host, or they may host immediately or never host at all.

I have 2 huge RBTA's in my 55g and I have owned 2 different pairs of Ocellaris' over the last few months. None of them ever looked at the RBTA's, I put up pics all over the tank, I shot food into the nems to get them to go in, nothing. I did that for about 2-3 months.

One day I saw a smaller GBTA at the LFS and bought it. It footed itself that night and after about 2 days I noticed one of my BW clowns had vanished. I looked closely and found it sleeping in the GBTA, score.

I kept one pair of clowns and now they fight over the GBTA, while they still never bother with the huge RBTA's like two inches away.

Here's some pics, hopefulyl one day they'll host the RBTA's so much bigger and room for them both. Maybe try to get a GBTA also:
