Black sand

That's too bad about the gobys. I have black sand in my 20L and it really makes the coral and fish stand out.

I did a mixture of Aragalive Indo-Pacific and Tahitian moon sand. I got mine from thatfishplace.com for a little cheaper than drsfostersmith.com

I have a yashia goby in a 12Gdx with black sand. He is fine- Tahitian black sand is good. It will swirl around for a few weeks until your diatoms kick in- keep your flow a bit lower until it does unless you dont mind blowing sand :)

i bought a bag of the tahitian moon sand and its very sharp. i would not use it if you want a sifting goby or one that digs. There are other brands that carry black sand and is much finer/softer like sugar, but I do not know the name.

I'm quite sure I've read the Tahitian Moon Sand(or I might go as far to say, black sand in general) does not inhibit bacterial growth and therefore will not lower nitrates. Furthermore, I don't think gobies are racist they just won't eat at a restaurants who don't serve food.

here is a pic of my tank with tropic isle tahitian moon sand i added it in this morning. i rinsed it inside the tank you can look at my tank setup thread to see the steps i did to rinse it. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=849093

heres the pic it looks awesome well worth doing

I used the black sand on my old NC 12 for about a year, then got sick of how damn dirty it kept getting from the LR shedding. I went to normal white sand in my 29G and haven't looked back.

I thought that the tahitian moon didnt have buffering capabilities and made saltwater difficult to manage.

Since you generally do regular water changes and have a minimal sand bed in nanos, buffering is not a concern. Tahitian Moon in particular is just fine.

I heard that black sand will not support the organisms that are in live sand because black sand is not natural and it from volcanoes. So it does not break down debris that fall onto it, and help clean the tank. any one else have any thoughts on that?
