hi. this is my first posting on reefcentral so i apologize if this topic has already been covered. i have two Amphiprion ocellaris ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ False Perculas. i have had them for two months with no problems. in the past week they both have demonstrated a few small flat black spots on their bodies. otherwise, they are swimming, breathing and eating normally, and are appearing healthy in every regard. is this black ich? or is it something else? need i be worried? thank you to those who know more than me and can help me out!

Welcome to Reef Central, sorry, I don't know how to do the cool welcome banner thing!
There's another thread going too with these black spots if you want to peek there too.

Sometimes the corals they hang out in sting them, and the spots are a reaction to that. Hopefully there's more info coming from the threads!

Good luck!

Welcome to RC:beer: :celeb2:

The Black Spots could be either "black ich" or a melanistic response to the fish hosting in something other than an anemone.

If it's black ich, (not Ich at all but a trematode worm), the spots will be uniform in size & shape and tend to "migrate" around the fish. Many of the spots will also fall off in a FW (Freshwater) Dip.

Melanistic spots are NOT uniform in shape/size/outline and will vary greatly on all three counts. They do not disappear in FW dips or move around the fish. They are harmless and in most cases will go away with time.

Frogspawn, zoos & mushrooms are often seen to cause these spots.

Have you added any corals lately?

thanks so much for all the replies. i think these are the melanistic spots as they are not uniform. i recently added some mushroom and zoos so i suspect this is cause of the black spots. regards, rob
