Black worms for feeding?

mandarin chick

I have heard black worms are great for conditioning broodstock and putting weight on emaciated fish. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I have brought back really skinny freshwater fish using blackworms. In fact, I used to feed them quite frequently. A lot of people use them to get copperband butterflies and other difficult species to eat.

Most LFSs have them (even those that think they're still selling tubifex worms), at least out here. Or you can order them on line from

All my fish love them. If you get them from a LFS, try to find out when they get them in, and buy them that day. Fresh ones vs ones that have been at the LFS for a week are like night and day, at least IME.

thank you for all the responses! looks like i will be adding black worms to the list of live foods i raise for my critters. there is a rumour out there that they may cut my mandarin training time in half and can increase spawning i my broodstock.... just wanted to make sure they were safe first.

thanks again!

IME, mandies love them. the one caveat with feeding blackworms to SW fish is to do it sparingly, a little at a time, as they don't live long in SW at all.
