Blackthunda77's 80Gal Shallow Reef Build

Ok, well in a spur of the moment decision last week i decided to take down my 90 Gal reef and start on a new set up. I always liked the shallow rimless tanks and the new Deep Blue frag tanks are pretty impressive and the shallow wide footprint caught my attention. I was almost walking out the door from all pets with the 60 gal rimless frag tank but got a really good deal on the 80 gal version which is the same foot print, 48x24 but it is 16in high instead of the 12in. So i basically only dropped down 10 gals in size from my 90 but the footprint is much wider and will accommodate a wider range of corals and i wider range of lights due to the shallow build of the tank. Ill try to keep this thread as updated as possible, most of these pics are with my camera phone so sorry for the quality.

Thats it for today. Thanks to everyone who responded to my for sale thread. All the $$ was put towards this new tank! :)

Nice tank! Are you just using it for frags, or it going to be hybrid frag / reef tank?

Keep us posted

Thanks guys. I'm extremely happy with the tank. Nice solid build, nice sillicone work. The tank is 48x24x16.

And no it will not be a frag tank at all. It's actually replacing my standard 90 gallon reef tank.

I like those dimensions. I didn't know that tank existed. I look forward to updates, as I will be in the same boat soon. Shallow tanks ROCK!

Very nice tank. The dimensions are really nice.. What's the plans for it. Have you figured out what kind of lighting your going with yet. Good luck with the build.

Plan for the tank is a mixed reef. SPS, LPS, Zoas, Softies, etc. Also, since noone wanted to buy my dual 150watt hamilton unit im just going to use that :) 2 - 150watters for a tank that shallow should be plenty for even sps.

Love the tank man. I was staring your tank down at All Pets Davie.. LOL With the nice big sold sign on it. Was that the one?

jonnyu, you know whats funny? That WAS my tank, or was SUPPOSED TO BE! LOL The story is this. I went to the store last saturday. I saw the tank, its been there for months, maybe even since they opened. So thats when i decided to jump the gun, but i said i would wait till monday to do my measurements and if i can get my current tank sold and not have to come out of pocket i would buy it.

So, after the weekend i sold most of the stuff i posted so i went on monday to buy it. IT WAS GONE. I was like NO WAY! ITS BEEN HERE FOR MONTHS. The guy said someone literally came in 30 mins ago and bought it and its in the back. WE ARE REMOVING THE OVERFLOW BECAUSE THE PERSON WANTS TO MAKE IT INTO A TURTLE TANK! I basically just started laughing and was like ok, how long to order one? they said they can have one in form e in a couple days. So while placing the order they showed me this one on the computer and i couldnt pass it up. I guess it was meant to be, lol. and with the 20% off coupon i was able to get it for under $400. In any event, im much happier i decided to get this one. Im envisioning some island/bommie style set up with alot of open sand and swimming space.

LOl I did see it in the back. That is one major turtle tank.
After I seen that volcano tank I think I know my next project. Well again very nice tank and look forward on tagging along with your build. I live in Pines and work in Davie so if you need some help let me know.

Looks like someone will be having a nice day of shopping at the frag swap!!! Dont forget the raffle will include CaribSea sand, Rocks, and a bunch of other goodies youll be able to place in that tank. $1 could get you a lot, LOL.

Sweet tank. A bonsai-esk mangrove island would be sweet. :D

Hey if you decide to go T5s I know someone selling a nice ATI fixture.
