Yes, like all urchins they need a small amount of meat in their diet. If you don't supply it they may graze on sessile inverts.

Definitely mine eats just about anything. It even got a hold of a small dead anthias that I didn't have time to pull out of the tank before leaving for work. This urchin now has spines over " 10" long.
