Blasters on Stylophora Coral?

I posted this in the general forum and didn't get very many responses, so someone suggested posting in the SPS forum.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my Stylophora coral? Other than the translucent bubbles, it has great polyp extension and nice color. It started with one or two, but has been getting worst. I touched one of them yesterday and it easily popped.

All my other SPS and LPS is doing just fine and shows no signs of this issue. Last nights water parameters were as follows (keep in mind that I intentionally keep my dKh that low because my system is ULN and I bleach coral if it goes above 8 - 8.5dKh)

  • Nitrate = 0pp
  • Phosphate = 0ppm
  • Calcium = 465ppm
  • Alkalinity = 7.33dKh
  • pH = 8.09

Just out of curiosity do you have a magnesium level?

Well not totally out of curiosity. Every once in a blue moon I have seen this on forums, many times the Magnesium was well over 1600.

For the sole purpose of documentation.

An image of the corals place in the tank prior to being handled might trigger something of significance.

My test the other day was 1,240ppm Magnesium, 440ppm Calcium and a dKh of 7.67. Nitrates are 0ppm and Phosphate is 0ppm.

As for the Magnesium, I'm currently moving that up to between 1,600 - 1,800ppm in an attempt to battle Bryopsis. Before handling it looks great other than the blisters. The polyp extension is wonderful. The coral isn't currently mounted anywhere because I've been trying to figure out where I want to put it. For the last few months, it was jammed in the rock work, but not epoxied down. A hermit crab knocked it over a few weeks ago (after the blisters started) so I just stuck it in the sand for now until I figure out what to do with it.

My main concern is that it will spread to my other corals. I'm wondering if I should remove it from the tank completely?

Are the blisters soft and jellylike? Have you tried to scrape them off to allow the coral to re grow in those areas?

Nope, not like jelly or squishy in any way. It's almost like someone blew a bubble. The pop very easily and don't seem to be filled with anything but it's hard to tell because when I touched on the coral was already wet so I really couldn't tell.

I have the same thing on a pink birdsnest. Its been going on for over a year with no negative effects.

I had a stylo like that that had inflated or swolen polyps, is that what your seeing? I never saw them move and it didn't hurt anything so I just left it. Grew so big I had to sell it in fact.
